We stumbled upon the El Marques de San Jorge as it is close to the plaza grande in the centre of Villa de Leyva (VdL). The rooms were reasonable priced at 70,000 pesos (£20) a night (breakfast and parking included) and it seemed nice from first appearances. The hotel is in the old Spanish colonial style with all the rooms situated around a central courtyard. After checking in at around 3pm we stayed out all afternoon and evening enjoying the beautiful town on VdL.||||When we returned to our room at around 11pm we found a couple of large cockroaches swimming in our toilet, a few large centipedes walking around the bathroom and a few more large cockroaches in the bedroom. Who knows how many more there were! Well we didn’t stay long enough to find out. We picked up our bags and went to reception, only to be informed that there were no other rooms available. We told the receptionist that we were horrified by the infestation of cockroaches and were leaving.||||Luckily VdL is a safe place at night so we walked to the other side of the plaza to another hotel we had seen called La Espanola (a nice hotel - see my other review about this). We returned to El Marques de San Jorge in the morning to collect our car, half expecting some form of compensation but more than willing to pay a fee for the overnight car parking. ||||The receptionist immediately demanded we pay the full price for the room and showed absolutely no sign of remorse or pity for the cockroaches. Not even an apology. We refused to pay and asked to speak to the manager. The elderly woman manager again didn’t care about what happened and demanded we pay for the room and said that in towns there are always cockroaches everywhere! My wife and I again both refused to pay and the manager called my wife a (“----”) (-----) at which we then walked away and drove off. ||||Later that day we went horse riding and told our guide what had happened. He said that the El Marques de San Jorge is well known for cockroaches and it is a place best avoided. When a local tells you to avoid a place, its wise to heed his words.||||For those who have read my previous reviews you will know I try to give both the good and bad points about a hotel. So to be fair…The El Marques de San Jorge is very close to the plaza grande (as are about 20 other hotels) and had we stayed there, it was cheap at 70,000 pesos (as are about 20 other hotels). ||||In short, do not stay here. This is probably the worst hotel in...
Read moreThis is a pretty house that has been converted into a hotel. This hotel is very well located, in a pretty street, close to the main plaza. There are a lot of restaurants and stores around it, but the rooms inside are quiet. The rooms are spare, but clean. There is not central water heater, but the shower head has a device that warms the water enough to make it comfortable.||The staff is very nice and helpful. This is not a luxury hotel, but it is comfortable enough for few days. For around $100 US a night you get your room, parking, WiFi and breakfast. The breakfast is nice: eggs, juice, bread, coffee; the portions are not huge, but it is enough to start your day. Overall, I think this is a good choice; the price is very reasonable compared with other hotels I visited around this hotel and for what you get in this town. By the way, we did not have any problems with roaches or any other...
