Hotel Veli Joze is 15-20 mins walk from the tourist drag, in what used to be the naval headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian navy, in the 19th century. On the outside, the architecture could be described as faded splendour. The inside however seems to be a cross between student dorm and cheap hostel, with basic decor and cheap fixtures. Our double room was in fact two single beds pushed together, with the bedclothes strangely half made. The rooms could be better cleaned, I rode the rollercoaster of finding two unopened cans of beer, then a pair of dirty boxer shorts, after a cursory glance in the room's cupboards. The curtains let most of the street light in, and the road outside the hotel seemed fairly busy and noisy, with the ageing 'double windows' providing little in the way of sound deadening. Breakfast is average, though it is worth getting up early to avoid the slew of guests taking advantage f the latter part of the breakfast hours. The coffee tastes like detergent and is best avoided. 'fruit juice' is synthetic cordial that I cannot believe had any fruit content whatsoever. In fact, the hotel would do well to dispose of both drinks machines and offer fresh water. That said, the staff were friendly, we didn't find any cockroaches, and we slept. 20 minutes walk away from town finds you at pleasant beaches and crystal clear sea.

Great hotel for the price. Rooms had plenty of space, good shower. Desk to work at. Long walk to center but not far from scooter rental, which makes everything close. Wifi a little slow for working but sufficient for internet. Very friendly staff.

My family and I travel a lot ; all around the world. We spend the night in 4 and 5 * hotels, where the prices are sometimes even 350 euros per night. This time we kindly accepted the invitation of the bride and groom to be guest on their wedding. The wedding was organized by the company PLATER USLUGE ZAGREB, which leases the Dom Hrvatskih branitelja from the state of Croatia and THEY ALSO manages the Hotel Veli Jože in Pula. Rooms were reserved also for us by our friend, 5 rooms were reserved. Around 6 pm, my husband and I arrived at the hotel Veli Jože, where we received the keys and a three-bed room. My husband went to the reception and explained that we had booked a 2-bed room. The lady said let's stay. Around 10 p.m., a problem arose because other families who had booked rooms with us just didn't get them. We had already showered, after which they called us to change rooms??? I called on reception from the wedding at 10.30 p.m. and the women on reception told me, that is everything OK, that they have 3 3-bedrooms more and 1 2 bedroom. At 4:30 in the morning we came from the wedding , together with another family, in a good mood, of course, we also drank a glass or two of wine, which means that we were absolutely not allowed to drive the car. We got a shock. There was a family of 3 with us,|| (Another three-members family were on the way to the hotel), and the hotel was full, and there was only one more double room available. Then the receptionist told me at 4:30 in the morning that I should pack my baggage and my belongings and move them to one floor higher of course by myself and more; the new guests should have dirty towels and they could sleep in our room (????). More. he very rudely and insolently demanded that our friends' child sleep in our room. Which is not a problem for us, but the child did not accept it because he is too small. So the family was forced to drive 120 km back home at 4.30 am, after a party ( a wedding), because the hotel did not have a room for them!!!!!! All responsibility must therefore be accepted by Tatjana Abram, and we will use all legal means to make her responsible for this. I can't imagine if an accident happening during they drove home, because the driver fell asleep from fatigue, there were also reports of a child dying. Shame on you Tatjana Abram. if you are not capable of running a hotel and only collecting money from people, even for hall rentals, then go into the field because you are not capable of doing your job professionally. Of course, I will inform the competent authorities in the Republic of Croatia and also in the Republic of SLO about this. The state MUST simply not allowed to rent real estate to such people. To people who make fools of their guests.|| PLATER USLUGE ZAGREB ponudila spanje v hotelu veli Jože, smo se prilagodili in sprejeli to ponudbo, kljub temu, da smo prvič v življenju spali v hotelu 2. ||I will inform t about this happening tourist board, which issues the categorization, and the competent Minister of Tourism in Croatia all about your disorganization. I strongly advise all brides and grooms not to rent the Dom Hrvatskog Branitelja for their wedding, let alone to have their guests stay overnight in the Hotel Veli Jože. And Mrs. Tatjana Abram, don't think that we ( guests) who slept there are poor, we chose this hotel because it was part of the reservation. Many prominent businessmen slept in this hotel that night, some of us also own 5 hotels, quite a few distinguished guests, but despite the fact that their reservations were confirmed, they had to travel from...

Living at the hotel for two nights during the winter in February 2009.

The hotel was nearly empty, because it was off-season time. The room was barren, but sober and clean. I understand the place is mostly conscripts in the military or working for. They study there. Now, however, the hotel was empty.

Overnight accommodation is affordable and not expensive place. I had to change to another hotel because of the heating broke down, when I stayed only two nights. As the coldest time of the year, it was a real problem. I just happened to have the flu at the time and I needed a warm room and a hot water shower.

I am on the whole satisfied with the time, and I managed to spend a concentration plant. The staff is friendly and helpful. Breakfast, which is included in the price, was a modest, but adequate.

Hej, Maria Koponen, Helsinki, Finska.

I really don’t like giving bad reviews, especially to hotels or restaurants but unfortunately I don’t have a choice here. From start to finish….

The man on reception spoke okay English but couldn’t understand any, not even the word “reservation” I told him I had a reservation here and he told me no and pointed to the door. I even showed him my confirmation from booking.com and it still took him two no’s before he realised I did actually have a booking here.

The room was big and spacious (which is good) but at night the air con unit which was not being used made an awful noise all night. The windows are made of paper and you can hear every noise from outside. Both of which affected my nights sleep.

The toilet flush was broken, when flushed the toilet continued to discharge into the bowl for a long period of time. The sink wasn’t able to empty as quick as the water was running. I didn’t report either issue as the guy would not have understood what I said.

The corridor of the ground floor I was on smelt of cigarette smoke which for a non-smoker was repulsive and shouldn’t be allowed in a building.

Our passports were kept at reception instead of being given back to us despite this being the only place in Croatia that said they had to keep our passports. This made me feel nervous as the guys communication skills to an English person were zero!

The breakfast was okay, editable and the only reason why I gave it a 1* instead of a 0* (plus there’s no...
