The pillows suck. Ok that gets all the negatives out of the way. I was getting some immigration paperwork taken care of and needed multiple nights of stay so they came off their walk-up price. Ended up about two thirds of what's published on booking sites. The location was ideal. I had plenty of time to kill between my immigration appointments so I walked a lot. Easy 6 to 8 block walk to Calle Conde which leads down into the Colonial Zone. Three blocks south is the Malecón, a street that runs along the Caribbean. Only thing there is that crossing over the street is certain death except on Sundays when traffic vanishes. I've Uber'd out of this area. A block north or south are busy streets with public transportation or taxis. 8 or 10 blocks west and you can jump on the Metro subway. For your money the rooms are spartan but contain the basics. TV, good wifi, a/c, firm bed, shower with great pressure and gobs of hot water. I had a room away from the street and it was quiet. Made friends with the staff and got room cleaned and linen and towels changed every three days. They have their own laundry facilities up on the roof and Carmen washed, dried and folded my clothes for a few hundred pesos. They have over 80 solar panels up on the roof so no power interruptions. That's a big deal anywhere in this country. Security at the hotel was great. An employee unlocks the gate and locks it again after every entry or exit. In this area of Gásque there are multiple restaurants or cafeterias with local foods. Banks, copy stores, colmado for snacks and cold beer, and a great fruit smoothie stand around the corner called Benefruta (see my review). I highly recommended La Gran Mansión. Value for your pesos. ...
Read moreI arrived and the only room they had ready was at the back corner by the kitchen/dining room. I was worried about the noise, so I asked to be moved as I really just wanted to chill if I was going to spend time in the room. Within 10 minutes, they had another room ready for me, and the lady was so nice about she didn't make me feel like I was inconveniencing her at all. It's clean and has a nice patio where you can sit and enjoy some air. but they didn't clean my room during my stay. I stayed 2 nights, and the biggest bother is that they don't clean the bathroom. You can't flush toilet paper and they didn't empty the waste basket. I'm not sure why it's not the standard in a hotel in a country where you have to put your used TP in the trash. Ew.||||Wif-Fi is free and I had a clear strong signal. The location is pretty good if you can't manage to find a place right in the Colonial Zone. It's only a 10 minute walk to the historic area, and it's safe and clean. There's not a lot to do around there in the evening though, but there are a couple of places to go and grab a drink and a bite to eat if you don't feel like wandering too far after dark. There's plenty to see and do during daylight hours. More than anything, it's the getting lost in a strange area after dark that worried me, not so much that I felt unsafe. ||||I didn't like that you have to walk to the corner to by water, as you can't drink the tap water. So make sure you have enough to last you through evening...
