First the positives. If i were just rating the staff i would give them 5 stars. They are extremely helpful and attentive. The room was clean and nicely appointed. Plenty of hot water but you may have to let it run for a few minutes for it to get hot. The location is excellent if you want to be in the historic center. Breakfast was ok. Eggs prepared as requested , bread , juice and coffee or tea.|Now for the negatives: the in-room wifi was very poor. I usually had to go to reception to get connected and occasionally that didn't work either. Most of the rooms are organized around a center capped courtyard. The courtyard also serves as the dining and guest congreation area. Therein lies the problem. The courtyard becomes an amplified echo chamber. From the encircling rooms you can hear every sound coming from the courtyard. This hotel seens to attract large groups that tend to make a lot of noise in the courtyard well into the night. Without prompting management will make no effort to stop the noise at a reasonable time. Furthermore , if your room is on the street level you are likely to have diners sitting just outside your window. I prepaid for a month. If i had known about the Wifi and noise problem i would have chosen somewhere else. If you're only staying for a few days you may get lucky and avoid the Wifi and noise problems in which case you will likely...
Read moreWe arrived in the historic walled town of Cuenca "Old Town" without a reservation, we stopped at several hotels on the way in to check the availability and cost of accommodation until we found the Gran Hotel. The Gran Hotel is conveniently located in the heart of "Old Town" near the Plaza Calderon and many other attractions including the City Tour Bus stop.||The Hotel has many rooms, single, double or triple, which all face into the internal court yard. Very deceiving from the outside but quite nice on the inside. ||We each got a single room which was quite large with a double bed, wardrobe, washroom (with plenty of hot water), flat screen cable TV, free Wifi and breakfast included for $30.00 US per night. Unfortunately there is no parking on site but I was offered a key card which allowed me free overnight parking a block away.||The staff were incredibly friendly and very helpful. There is a restaurant in the hotel which serves only breakfast and a very well priced 3 course fixed menu lunch, which changes every day. The most expensive lunch I noticed was $4.00 US.|We stayed at the Gran for 4 days. |I would recommend this hotel to any one who wants to be in the old...
Read moreA complete con, they'll make a reservation and then up sell the room. Hotel is run by a terrible and unprofessional manager. I arrived the day before my check in to make my reservation (which I successfully did) but upon arrival, I was told by another staff member that my room had been sold since it was a holiday weekend and I'd not left a deposit to secure the room! When I was there in person, apart from my passport details, no payment was demanded. They showed me a different, tiny room but said the price would remain the same. After discussion, the staff member William kindly showed me to a family room and I said I'd take that instead, even though it was more expensive than what I'd reserved. Later the same day, he came and said the room had now been sold to a family and I could only stay there for 1 night. The hotel manager is simply greedy and they'll resell rooms to the highest bidder! There's no atmosphere, breakfast is simply the same as everywhere else and the toilet on the top floor not well attended to. Showers are hot and the location central. Windows open onto the central area so there's no privacy as everyone passes by your window and it can...
