Alexander — Hotel in Cairo

The evening I arrived I was quite shocked- no toilet paper, soap or towels. Some nails laying loose on the floor and cigarette burns in the bedding. Also hairs all over the floor and in the sink etc. Quite dirty and noisy-a lot of shouting right outside my door, even at 4am (mostly men having loud conversations!) The building which the hotel is in is dark and rundown, and the hotel is on the 3rd floor. There is no signage except one at the main door, so on arrival I just cautiously climbed the stairs hoping to find the actual hotel. ||Unfortunately, the hotel pickup I arranged with the manager in advance didn’t show up at the airport, so I spent almost an hour there searching and waiting in the arrivals hall, before just getting an Uber (at least Uber was much cheaper than the price the hotel was going to charge!)||After checking in, I had a quick wash and went to bed (after an 18 hour journey). However, I was awoken by a knock at my door (approx 11pm). The manager had decided to drop by to say welcome, take payment and sell some tours. I politely told him I had everything booked already and after 10 mins managed to get back to bed.||As I went to sleep, I was thinking I’d definitely book somewhere else for the next 2 nights and check out early (despite having paid already!)||The next morning I immediately went to buy soap and toilet paper etc from the supermarket, and then I felt better. The people working at Alexander Hotel (the young guy who checked me in and the cleaners) are really helpful and polite, and that’s a big plus. Also, location is good. So in the end I stuck with the hotel for 3 nights, and it was acceptable (helpful, polite staff, aircon, hot water, comfy bed). Incidentally, there is WIFI but the signal is weak and goes in and out. ||Overall, I wouldn’t recommend staying here because I imagine that most hostels in Cairo must be cleaner. I wouldn’t...

Alexander Hotel in Kairo liegt zentral in der neuen Innenstadt. Alle wesentlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten sind von dort leicht per Fuß oder Bus/Metro erreichbar.||Das Hotel liegt im 2. Stock und ist in einem typischen Altbau aus der engl. Zeit. Der Fahrstuhl, offen, ist schon sehr abenteuerlich, hat aber funktioniert.||Die Zimmer sind sauber mit Bad und AC, teilweise ohne richtige Fenster, was wg. des Verkehrs (ständiges Gehupe) und der hohen Temperaturen im Sommer eher vorteilhaft ist. Das ganze Hotel bleibt so relativ kühl. ||Toll sind ein großer "common room", das schnelle Internet über W-LAN/WiFi und die netten Angestellten - meistens junge Studenten. Nach 24h nachts muss man klingeln und jemand muss die Haustüre öffnen, war aber kein Problem. Das "Frühstück" kann man getrost vergessen, aber in der Umgebung gibt es genügend Möglichkeiten.||Das Hotel bietet ein gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Zu Beachten ist, dass die Preise zumeist in US$ oder Euro angegeben werden. Diese werden auch akzeptiert, allerdings sind die Fremdwährungen nicht ohne hohe Gebühren in Kairo zu haben. Das doppelte Umwechseln Euro ägypt. Pfund am Geldautomaten wieder in Euro/US$ sollte man vermeiden. Bei der Bezahlung in EGP wird aber vom Hotel ein relativ hoher "Zuschlag" zum US$ genommen. Auch für Kresitkarten gibts Aufpreise. Also besser die Summe in Euro/US$ bar gleich mitbringen.||||Noch eine WARNUNG zum Schluß: Nicht deren Airport-Service zum Flughafen buchen! Dieser kostet 60 EGP für 1 Strecke/Person. Darauf oder für weniger kann man auch jedes Taxi runterhandeln. Mein Airportservice hatte trotz Vorbestellung 55 Minuten (!!!) Verspätung. Wenn man knapp kalkuliert, ist dann der Flieger weg. Offenbar wollte bei mir die Transferfirma verschiedene Passagiere in einem Minibus zusammenlegen, was nicht klappte, aber das erfährt man alles nicht, sondern natürlich hatte der Fahrer just vorher einen Unfall...

A brilliant location and ideal backpacker spot, I really enjoyed this place and appreciated the owner and staff did not give me the hard sell of tours or extras which other hotels did, although the prices quoted seemed very good.
