Super 8 by Wyndham Chemnitz — Hotel in Chemnitz

Room: This is a budget hotel, so the rooms are a bit small, but there are plenty of creative use of space here and the room still has a desk and chair. If you've ever been to a Super 8 Motel in the USA, this place feels like a noticeable upgrade. The mattress was comfortable but the pillows caused some neck pain, would prefer firmer pillow options. There isn't a coffee machine in the room (forcing you to buy it from downstairs) but of course, Super 8 is a budget brand. Towels and soaps are included. Noise was quiet, our room faced the backside of the building. ||||Wifi: I didn't run a test, but expect around 15-20mbps (maybe more) Zoom calls and streaming Netflix were totally fine. ||||Service: Melanie (front desk person with glasses) was amazing, and provided a level of service I expect at an Iberostar resort or a Hilton hotel, honestly. Her English was fluent and was willing to use Google Translate to bridge some language barriers with some of the friendly Ukrainian guests. She had a kind attitude and was a delight to interact with if you had questions. For management, please promote her to a supervisor or management role. If all the other employees were like her, my review would be 5 stars. ||||The cleaning staff were friendly enough, but knocked on our door at 8:50AM on a sunday morning to ask us whether we wanted cleaning or not which was a bit early for my taste as I was asleep.||||Please note, the front desk people in the night shift are not as fluent in English, so be prepared for some Google Translate and hand gestures. There was one particular gentleman (with short brown hair) that gave me and my partner some weird vibes. Asked very in-depth questions about our relationship instead of answering some questions we had about the hotel. Nothing happened, but just a very uncomfortable feeling. ||||Location: This was very central to Chemintz Zentrum, also about 15 minutes to the Chemnitz Hbf by foot. Lots of food options around, honestly a very good location.||||Food: Breakfast wasn't too bad actualy for 12 euros. Automatic Expresso/Coffee machine, selection of juices, bread rolls + assortment of spreads, scrambled eggs, bacon/sausage, waffle/pancakes, and some cold meats. While there are cheaper options at some bakeries, this breakfast is worth it. ||||NOTE: Because of construction, the parking garage is VERY tricky to get into. Basically, go in the bus/tram lane towards Biendo Hotel opposite of Stadthallen Park (if you're not from Germany, this is sketchy but it's legit). After 250m, you'll then see Vapianos on the left, turn into that area, there's a small road that hugs the building opposite of Vapianos. Then turn left into the Eins Energie building. Wo fange ich an, wo höre ich auf? Bereits die Ankunft mit einem PKW ist schwierig. Das Navi lotst auf einen Hinterhof, auf dem die Gefahr eines Bußgeldes besteht oder gar Abschleppen droht. Den Weg vom Hinterhof ins Hotel kann man auch nur mutmaßen. Dort schnell eingecheckt und das Auto ins kostenpflichtige Parkhaus gestellt. Das Parkhaus an sich ist sehr beengt, aber noch ok, der Preis von 10 Euro pro Übernachtung ebenfalls. Reservieren kann man aber nicht, also ist es ein Glücksspiel bei ca. 40 Parkplätzen für ein Hotel dieser Größe (172 Doppelzimmer).

Das gebuchte Zimmer war nicht fertiggestellt: die Betten waren zerwühlt, in der Nasszelle lagen Handtücher auf dem Boden. Das kann natürlich mal passieren, aber es gibt nunmal keine 2. Chance für einen 1. Eindruck. Es wurde ein neues Zimmer zugewiesen, soweit ok. Das war auch fertiggemacht und sauber, jedoch hatte dieses 2 Einzelbetten. Eine Nachfrage an der Rezeption ergab, dass wir die Betten einfach zusammenschieben sollen. Alle Zimmer bestünden letztlich aus Einzelbetten, es gäbe gar keine (richtigen) Doppelbetten. Warum es dann einen Preisunterschied oder überhaupt verschiedene Kategorien gibt kann ich nun wirklich nicht nachvollziehen. Das Zimmer an sich hat keinen Schrank. Es gibt nur eine größere Ablageplatte, 2 Haken mit Bügeln und eine Nasszelle. Man lebt praktisch aus dem Koffer. Das mag für eine Nacht ok sein, bei mehreren Nächten finde ich das weniger schön. Die Nasszelle hat keine abschließbare Türe (nur eine Schiebetüre, die zahlreiche offene Spalten lässt) und halbtransparente Glasscheiben, auch zur Toilette. Wenn man das Zimmer also nicht alleine bewohnt, sollte man aus diversen Gründen besser keine Befindlichkeiten haben. In der Nasszelle waren Silberfische. Das Fenster im Zimmer lässt sich nicht öffnen, sondern nur kippen (1. Etage). Ende September bei 12 Grad Außentemperatur ist die Klimaanlage noch auf Kühlen eingestellt, die für die Nasszelle angepriesene Fußbodenheizung funktioniert ebenfalls nicht. Auf Nachfrage an der Rezeption müsste das mal langsam auf Heizen umgestellt werden. Am Tag nach der Reklamation war noch nichts umgestellt. Es war teilweise sehr kalt im Zimmer. Das geht überhaupt nicht und zeigt leider deutlich, dass weder mitgedacht noch auf Reklamationen zeitnah reagiert wird. Positiv ist, dass man auf den Betten gut schlafen kann und es 2 Kopfkissen pro Person gibt. Die Matratzen sind nicht durchgelegen, sind nicht zu hart und nicht zu weich.

Das mitgebuchte Frühstück entspricht dem bereits Beschriebenen: spartanisch, minimalistisch und täglich gleich. Das Rührei ist fad, alle Warmspeisen sind lauwarm, für Veganer oder Vegetarier ist die Auswahl sehr überschaubar. Zudem ist alles lieblos angerichtet. Es ist schon ok, aber wer will schon nur ok, noch dazu für das Geld? Apropos, Preis-Leistung passt hier für mich nicht zusammen. Für das Gebotene ist meinem Empfinden nach der abgerufene Preis um Einiges zu hoch.

Noch ein paar positive Aspekte: das WLAN ist sehr schnell, die Optik ist ansprechend, die Lage ist super und das Personal freundlich. Das Personal kann ja auch nichts für die Philosophie der Hotelkette. Dennoch: ich war das erste und letzte Mal in einem Super 8 Hotel. The hotel is very budget and modern. There isn't a lot of staff.||Positives: ||• on the edge of the city. It's a short walk to the main centre and there's a tram stop around the corner.|• room was made up on second day. Bins emptied and towels replaced.|• Cannot fault the staff. They were friendly.||Negatives: ||• breakfast was a disaster on the first day. No bread of any sort available except toasting bread. No scrambled egg or mini bratwurst left. Just rolls of fatty tough bacon. No fruit whatsoever. No cheese left. No boiled eggs left. No yogurt. I just grabbed some cereal and coffee. Very poor value. Rest of stay I went for breakfast at 6.30am to secure some food. Coffee was incredibly rough. The breakfast was cheap low quality food in my opinion. One morning the scrambled eggs were brown and crispy.|• reception and bar is manned by a single person.
