The castle (or “kastro” in Greek) was built on ancient acropolis remains and you can see it from the port. It was built by conqueror Sanoudos. Visiting the castle, you will see old mansions with their coat of arms (due to Venetian residents). In the square with the Catholic Cathedral, in the center of the castle, you can see the ruins of the tower Sanoudos lived. You will also see Ursuline nuns school, Kappela Kazatza and the Archaeological museum. Many local people have made their homes along the castle ramparts. Tiny alcoves dot the long climb up to the top where the view is spectacular. The area and shops are the best on the island and this area was the best food we had as well. Give yourself time to wander the stairs and corridors and enjoy it.
