I would like to give it more but...
First of all: My friend and I visited this place at the end of September 2018 so the few staff members I refer to are hopefully gone.
I heard that the owner does great things for the environment around the lake, so it makes me sad to just give 3 stars but there's a reason why... If you got the time please read the long summary.
Short summary: Great spot with a chance to find new friends with a good after-sunset-vibe, but some of the staff members needs to be replaced.
Long summery: The spot The atmosphere was great, it was a lot of people (without feeling too crowded) during happy hour.
We took a private room (room 3.1) and it needs some small improvements (my friend and I are not picky but it did smell a bit musty), I think a fan would solve it.
When we got "stuck" at the hostel due to a never ending rain (heavy rain) the receptionist refused to open up the shared kitchen so we could get our leftovers from the fridge (the hostel does not have a restaurant). I want to address that we did not want to use the kitchen but simply grab some food. This was around 9 pm.
We left the key at the reception when going for a half day boat trip (why lose it right?) and the receptionist... Well, when we got back she explained to us that this was nothing they have ever done before and they might think our room is free and give it to someone else (booking system anyone?). I think she was implying it was to much of a hassle to her to keep the key in the locker with a note.
The morning we left no one was in the reception, so I had to knock on the staff door to leave the key (and get the deposit back) and the guy that opened literally said "I can not help you, this is the staff room". After some well chosen words from me he finally understood that being hung over was not an excuse not to help a customer.
Getting the laundry done seemed to be a hassle for the woman in the reception (luckily one of us spoke Spanish fluently so we could talk directly with the local personnel)
So overall: Don't expect much help or anything like that. However, the place seems to draw people during their happy hour, so it's a great place to head over to for a...
Read moreAvoid This Hostel – Racism, Lies, and Zero Integrity
I had an absolutely awful experience at this hostel and strongly advise travelers to stay elsewhere. What happened during my stay wasn’t just unprofessional—it was deeply offensive and disturbing.
On my last night, while in my dorm, I overheard a conversation between two guests. At some point, one of them made a blatantly racist comment about people from my country. As someone from that country myself, I was shocked and deeply hurt. Hostels should be inclusive spaces where travelers from all backgrounds feel welcome, but instead, I was made to feel like I didn’t belong.
The next day, I reported the incident to the manager. He assured me that the hostel had a strict anti-racist and anti-discrimination policy and that he would address it. However, what followed was even worse.
The hostel later emailed me, claiming the guest had written an apology letter. But something felt off—the email contained two different versions of the letter, and the sender’s email address seemed completely fake. My suspicions were confirmed when I later ran into the guest and asked about it—she had no idea what I was talking about and had never written an apology.
When I confronted the manager, he admitted that he had fabricated the entire apology letter himself. Instead of handling a serious issue with integrity, the hostel tried to deceive me, dismiss my concerns, and cover up racism with lies.
This place has no respect for its guests or basic ethics. No one should have to experience what I went through—being subjected to racist remarks, deceived by management, and made to feel like my concerns didn’t matter. I would never recommend this hostel to anyone, and I sincerely hope booking platforms take action against such behavior.
There are plenty of hostels that truly value inclusivity and honesty—this is not one of them. Think twice...
Read moreStaying at Mr. Mullet’s Hostel in San Pedro was one of the highlights of our trip, and I can’t imagine a better introduction to hostel life. This was our very first hostel experience, and we honestly couldn’t be more grateful that it happened here. From the moment we arrived, the energy was infectious—warm, welcoming, and full of people from all corners of the world.
We checked in on Wednesday and were immediately swept into the fun with karaoke night. The atmosphere was electric, with guests cheering each other on, laughing, and bonding over music. By Thursday, we were ready for the legendary Mr. Mullet’s Boat Party, and it did not disappoint. Cruising the beautiful Lake Atitlán surrounded by incredible scenery, music, and new friends made for an unforgettable day. It was an epic blend of relaxation, fun, and adventure that we’ll carry with us forever.
The real heart of Mr. Mullet’s, though, is its people. Fernando was an outstanding host—engaged, approachable, and always making sure everyone was having the best time. The staff, including Raluca, Andrew, Donnie, and the rest of the team, were genuinely some of the kindest and most fun people we’ve met in our travels. They didn’t just run a hostel; they created a community where everyone felt included and valued.
Because of them, our time in San Pedro became something truly special. We left not only with memories of amazing nights and adventures but also with friendships and stories we’ll cherish for life. Mr. Mullet’s is more than just a place to stay—it’s a place to belong, connect, and celebrate life. If you’re heading to San Pedro, do yourself a favor: stay here. You’ll...
