and it wasnt somewhere we easily fell in love with, but we did warm to the hotel. We were travelling in India only for three weeks and didnt have a working phone so relied on online booking and emails to book ahead. Being the low season everywhere had been pretty empty so we werent concerned that we didnt hear back from the Green Hotel when we completed an online booking form as well as sending them an email the day before we arrived. When we did arrive they had no reservation for us and were uncommital as to whether they had seen our email or online form. The two women who manage the hotel turned out to be completely lovely, with nothing too much trouble - but they did come across a bit brusque when we pitched up. One room left, downstairs, large and pretty clean it looked over a scrap of grass inbetween what is the original hotel and one of the newer bits (basically we were below the cafe). The shower control came off in my hand - missing the pin that keeps it in place (probably still does?), and it was abit musty (no window in the bathroom), but it was a bed and after a long bus journey we were grateful. We were shown an alternative room that looked over the valley but it was in an older part of the hotel and not as nice - also the 'view' was severly compromised by the acres of concrete roofs and water tanks you have to look over first - and pesky monkeys. Construction is long since out of control in the town and though it must have been a pretty place at one time, you have to dig deep to find the charm in McLeodganj these days. Also sometimes it takes a while to settle in. ||Anyway, next day a room came free on the second floor slightly to the left of the cafe and we moved having negotiated very hard on the price. Clearly an upgrade - exceptionally comfortable bed, lovely white sheets - very clean, lovely bathroom, (everywhere we went this time had individual hot water geysers so that was never a problem) and a balcony that still looked over the roofscape of other hotels but was high enough to give a longer view over the valley - chairs to sit out and enjoy it. Still had pesky monkeys but otherwise excellent.||We ate breakfast in the hotel twice and dinner once and each time the food was really excellent - and well priced. The cafe and the outside balcony (no longer with a view as another bit of the hotel has been built up in front of it) are both very convivial to sit in. (We did struggle elsewhere to get quality Tibetan food which was what we were especially looking for). The two women managers were always very helpful, ringing ahead to our next hotel for instance and ordering us a taxi to the bus stand down in Dharamsala the morning we left. (Best line every heard from a taxi driver as an excuse for a scandolous price - 'its morning' ???).||Highly recommend staying at this hotel. Review a range of rooms, check the shower control, assess how busy it is in terms of what price you pay (no different from any other approach to a hotel). The location is excellent as well.||PS - good wifi too, both in the bedrooms and the cafe...
Read moreStay period : 16.07.2018 to 19.07.2018 Rapid review: It is around 45 minutes away from Kangra Airport (Rs. 850/- for prepaid taxi). Excellent location and good hotel. You can enjoy views of dauladhar and sunsets right from room balconies, you are a minute away from great food joints and shopping market, bus taxi stands. At walkable distance to major attractions. Mid range tarrifs. Go for Rs. 2200/- rooms on 2nd floor. Really nice. ( we had 501) Detailed review : Hotel Green gives you the best of 3 worlds ! 1. It offers rooms with large balcony with mountain view so you are close to nature all the time 2. it is very centrally located 3. it is reasonably priced. Apart from these 3 key factors, the hotel has a their own nice restaurant at the ground floor, the famous Nick’s kitchen and Jimmy’s kitchen is just 2 minutes walk away. I read lot of reviews on net before I finalized on the location and I am glad I made the perfect choice. Some of us like nature and rather lots of nature but in the hilly areas after the sunset it becomes too quiet, dark and can get boring. If you stay in location like the Hotel Green has, trust me you can enjoy your whole day sightseeing and upon return you may rest a little, take a shower and then again go down for walk or dinner or shopping. It is great to walk into the lit up market areas. I strongly recommend staying here and listed are some benefits of staying here : Excellent power back up system Great set top box and TV connections, good quality net Flawless housekeeping Great and helpful staff guides you throughout. Walkable to major attractions 1. Bhagsu waterfal, temple, Public swimming pool, Dalai Lama temple, market bus and Taxi stands They have their own taxi contacts. You can keep the telephone number with you. If you venture out on foot and at any point you are tired or in trouble in the midst of your hiking trails , just call them and the taxi will be there to pick you (upto motorable roads). I think I could make best out of my 3 nights’ stay at Macloedganj because I chose to stay with Hotel Green. Note : Monkeys are strolling along the balconies looking for food. They gate crash easily if the balcony doors are found open. Generally harmless but run away with food or packets that they suspect may have food . so be careful.. If you are sitting around , they will not come but if they find you are not around or taking a nap.. the theft is assured 😉 They are always taking rounds and looking for that one golden opportunity!😊 This however is the case with every hotel and household in...
Read moreWe had a surprisingly lovely 10-day stay at the Hotel Green/Namgyal (name seems to be interchangeable). We landed in a 1,500Rs room because it was what was available, and intended to change later, but never did because our room was so comfortable! Soft bed with clean sheets and thick comforters, a spacious and clean bathroom (soap, towels, and tp provided), good light, quiet (!) and a pleasant area to step out the door to. The bathroom did smell (like the plumbing), and windows once opened were hard to close. You're still in India! It's just easy to forget that here. We did get to look at an 800Rs room at one point, and it seemed similarly well kept, just smaller and closer to the street.
The highlight of this place, though, is the kind staff. Everyone we talked to seemed to care for us, and we enjoyed our time with them. Dicki, the woman who seems to be in charge, went to noticeable lengths to make sure we were happy, and Chicki(?), the other woman at the desk, was similarly helpful. Even the kitchen staff were cheery! (I did notice, though, that nobody seemed to get a day off! Sad.)
The food's great. It's a tad expensive, but it's so nice to know you can just go upstairs and eat something! Menu is fairly broad, but highlights to me were delicious potato momos (even better without the cheese!), dal makhani, "hash browns" (which are actually well-seasoned potato chunks), "Farmer's Breakfast" (an interesting and tasty concoction of egg, potato, tomato, and cheese), and the hot peach tea! The deck is nice in the daytime, whereas the inside seating area is wonderfully cozy and warm for hanging out any time in the comfy chairs, maybe meeting a fellow traveler, or picking a book off the nicely populated bookshelf. Kitchen closes at 9 (though they may serve you cake or tea after that).
Lastly, also worth a mention is the extremely thorough billing process. We had all our meals put on our room tab, accumulated quite a lot, and expected it might just be handed to us in a lump sum. But no, every day and meal was itemized, and Chicki went through every meal ticket to make sure it matched and was represented on the bill. Then gave them all to me so I could input them in my personal budget! Amazingly thorough!
Oh, wi-fi is good both in the restaurant and downstairs in the rooms. And location is convenient, on a nice street. Wow, this place has it all!! Thank you for a...
