The church of St. John in the wilderness is an old Anglican church situated in the beautiful valley of McLeodganj, which is at a distance of about 8 kilometres from Dharamshala. The church was built in the year 1852. It was dedicated to John the Baptist and also one of the viceroys of India, Lord Elgin was buried here in 1863. With its neo-gothic architecture, the church, known for its stunning design is set amidst deodar forests and is full of memorial stones of the British soldiers who were posted here.Nestled in the beautiful picturesque location, St. John Wilderness Church with its quiet and serene surroundings will definitely give you a sense of peace and calm. On the outside, it may look like an old and abandoned structure but the insides are still very well maintained and quite active. The church is known to attract a lot of tourists and visitors on almost all days and especially on Sundays. On the outside, the Belgian stained glass windows are the main attractions of the church while on the inside, the polished wood of the altar railing and old brass oil lamps which are now converted into electric light holders, make it very appealing. Along the walking path in the church, the holy cross symbols are artistically made with colourful stones. The church is usually under close watch by security guards to make sure no damage is caused by tourists and visitors.

Nestled amidst the enchanting landscapes of McLeod Ganj, the Church of St. John in the Wilderness stands as a testament to the region's colonial history. Constructed in 1852, this Anglican church is surrounded by deodar trees, creating an idyllic setting for reflection and prayer. The church owes its name to St. John the Baptist and was built in neo-Gothic architectural style. Its grey stone structure and stained glass windows evoke a sense of historical charm. Visitors are drawn to the peaceful atmosphere, as the church stands as a solitary guardian amidst the natural beauty of the Dhauladhar Range. Inside, the church features beautiful Belgian stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes. The old graveyard adjacent to the church adds a touch of mystique, with weathered tombstones marking the final resting place of British soldiers from the 19th century. The Church of St. John in the Wilderness serves not only as a place of worship but also as a historical landmark that allows visitors to connect with the colonial past of McLeod Ganj. It remains a serene retreat for those seeking solace and a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage.

This is a very beautiful British era church set in the Deodhar forest on the way to McLeodGanj on the road via the cantonment. This is one of the oldest churches in India and has historical connections also since the memorial to Lord Elgin is present there. It also has a cemetry attached to it. Twenty years ago it was really a church in the wilderness, and very few tourists knew of the place. However, during my recent visit there, I was shocked to see the place overflowing with tourists even on a weekday! This somehow disturbed the beauty and quiet of the place. The church has a huge bell which could not be fixed on the steeple due to its weight, so it was fixed on the ground in front of the church. This bell has now been barricaded up in a very haphazard manner taking away the beauty of the bell, and making it impossible to take any photograph of the bell from any angle. Very sad. There are also multiple touristy shops which have come up in front of the church spoiling the atmosphere of the place. Very disappointing visit, especially since I saw the place twenty five years ago multiple times in all its glory.

Visiting this church was a delightful experience! Nestled amidst lush green forests, the church boasts beautiful architecture that's a treat for the eyes. You can easily spend time inside, admiring the intricate details, or step outside to soak in the natural beauty. One thing to note is the cemetery at the back, so it's best not to wander too far into the forest for pictures. The history and heritage of the church add depth to the experience, making it more than just a scenic spot. The surrounding forests provide a tranquil backdrop, perfect for a leisurely walk or quiet contemplation. After exploring the church, we enjoyed munching on tasty Maggi outside. And to add to the fun, it started lightly raining as we ended our visit. There's something magical about eating Maggi in the rain and clicking pictures on the road, creating wonderful memories. Whether you seek spiritual solace, architectural beauty, or simply a peaceful retreat in nature, this church offers a bit of everything, making it a must-visit destination for all.

This magnificent church is built amid the picturesque valley of Mcleodganj and is located about 8 kms away from Dharamshala. The church lies in a dense jungle between Mcleodganj and Forsythganj and is a monument dedicated to Lord Elgin, one of the viceroys of India, who died at Chauntra (Mandi district) and was buried here in 1863 A.D. This classic church, which has a Christian cemetery surrounding it, has lovely glass windows and boost amazing architectural design. It is ideally situated in the majestic 'Deodar' forest in the wilderness. The St. John Church is an Anglican church dedicated to John the Baptist, and is built in neo-Gothic architecture. Its main attraction, the Belgian stained-glass windows were donated by Lady Elgin, wife of Lord Elgin. The structure is so powerful that it survived the 1905 Kangra earthquake, which killed close to 19,800 people and destroyed most buildings in Kangra, Mcleodganj, and Dharamshala.
