Good Cheer Hostel — Hotel in Nusa Penida Subdistrict

Initially planned to stay there 4 nights in one of the 8-bed dormitories, due to good reviews and convenient location to various dive shops in Lembongan. Now, all those reviews were right on the hotel having excellent amenities, clean rooms, private beds, etc... but all of those were made moot because the dormitory beds triggered my dust/mold allergies enough that I couldn't sleep and I left for another place after just one night.

The dormitory rooms lack sufficient ventilation, and the beds even less so once the primary curtains are shut. Worse is that the connected shower and toilet areas, which are attached to the dormitory rooms, lack any independent exhaust of their own. As a result, the room and bed areas are constantly damp and musty, prime breeding ground for dust mites and mold.

As an aside, during that long night when I couldnt stay in the room to avoid triggering my allergies and just stayed outside in the common area, I found out that the free hotel wifi was shut down at some point late in the night and not turned on again until later in the morning. Or maybe there was a wifi outage going on.

Other random observations, both good and bad: Has a free water refill station Has hot water for the shower but low/weak water pressure (stayed on the 2nd floor) Towels are not free, available for rent. But they were out of them when I arrived on a Wednesday night. There's a small library of books next to the pool.

TLDR Avoid if you have dust and mold allergies. Probably fine and really good value if you...

Great location, about a 4-minute walk to the beach. Clean and fresh rooms that are cleaned every morning. Comfortable beds and convenient space for luggage. The staff at the hostel itself were super friendly, especially the young guy at the reception — he always greets you!

Unfortunately, there’s more to be desired from some of the restaurant staff — not all, but I’ve stayed here for about two weeks, and they don’t seem to recognize you. Incredibly slow service at breakfast even when you mention you're in a bit of a hurry. They also don’t really keep track of guests, even when you’re the only one in the restaurant.

The food and drinks are amazing — 10/10. They try to keep the pool clean, but the plants above make it difficult — perhaps they need some trimming.

Overall, I’m super happy...

Kamers in het algemeen goed voor een hostel, badkamers daarentegen waren erg slecht. Je deelde 2 douches en 3 toiletten met 2 kamers van 10 mensen. Dus in totaal 20 mensen. Het probleem was vooral dat 1 van de douches niet op slot kon en de douchekop stuk was. Er was dus nu 1 douche voor 20 mensen en deze wordt 1 keer per dag een soort van schoongemaakt. De douche was daarom best wel vies en niet echt fijn om in te douchen. Er zaten allemaal haren aan de muren en heel veel zand etc op de grond. De douchekop is ook in geen tijden schoongemaakt. In principe lijkt het wel mooi en is het lang niet zo erg als in sommige hostels, maar het kan wel echt beter. In de toiletten halen ze alleen een waterslang over de vloer en over de wc volgens mij, want de wc was helemaal nat en je zag nog veel zeepresten bij het putje. Verder zou ik het hostel sowieso aanraden om als er 2 douches en 3 toiletten worden gedeeld met zoveel mensen om dit in ieder geval 2 keer schoon te maken. De bedden waren erg fijn en alles was goed geluiddicht. Mooie grote lockers om volledig je tas in te stoppen. Als je de hoogste locker hebt is het alleen wel erg lastig om daar een grote backpack in te stoppen. Het personeel was erg aardig. Wel vond ik het vervelend dat toen ik een nusa penida tour boekte via het hostel mij werd verteld dat ik om 7.30-8.00 klaar moest zijn. Dan in de ochtend ben ik klaar om 7.30 wordt er opeens gezegd dat het 8.30-8.40 is, en ja die man die dat zei die is nog nieuw dus die weet dat nog niet helemaal. Daar was ik wel een beetje mee geïrriteerd, geen eens een sorry of iets. De nusa penida tour was erg goed met een erg leuke gids. Dus dat is zeker aan te raden. Het restaurant voor het hostel is niet echt aan te raden, in ieder geval niet voor het ontbijt, mijn scrambled eggs on toast duurde maar liefst over een uur terwijl er maar een paar mensen waren. Toen ben ik weg gegaan en kreeg ik later 1 sneetje brood met ei gratis. Het zwembad is mooi en je kunt er goed zitten. Er worden niet echt dingen georganiseerd in het hostel, zoals in veel andere. Geen feestjes etc. Er is wel elke avond live muziek in het restaurant. Leuke boekenkast waar je je gelezen boeken kan omwisselen...
