Mixed review of an otherwise good hotel: Day 1 post-covid opening pains perhaps?

Very nice hotel, comparable to 3-star business hotels in the USA. This review is for the Comfort Double Room my husband and I reserved for 1 night on 18-June-2021. I understand the rate was on sale. The cost was €76.95 (including tax), a portion of which was paid by booking.com as my “genius discount”.

THE GOOD: spacious at 193 s.f.. Modern Scandinavian-themed and comfortable furnishings. The queen sized bed had a firm mattress and luxurious cotton beddings and pillows. There was a sofa bed, a nice arm chair, a good sized desktop and chair for working on your laptop. The lighting was soft and plenty - a modern chandelier, a corner lamp, a desk lamp, and a bedside table lamp. The floor was either hardwood or wood-tile, and there was a rug in the bed area. The breakfast was a great deal better than the usual bread-or-pastry and coffee Italian breakfast. This hotel provided a “set tray” of meats, cornetto, spreads, cheese, Danish pastry, and homemade cake. There were juices, coffee, and water available. If you don’t usually eat a hearty breakfast, you may end up with leftovers. The breakfast was included in the hotel price. There’s a lobby with group seating you can use to meet friends or acquaintances.

THE BAD: Communication leaves a whole lot to be desired. I booked this hotel with Booking.com and after I received an email confirmation, I got another email that said we were being moved to the next door hotel which is part of their hotel group, the Ambasciatori Hotel. I sent a response asking if we should go directly to the Ambasciatori to check in. I never got a response in time. So we lined up to check in at Ambasciatori only to be told that the Diplomat had opened that day and we should go there instead. I never received an email to this effect. When I told the Diplomat reception that I didn’t get an email to direct me to the Diplomat instead of the Ambasciatori, she said “oh?” - not even an apology. Perhaps she was uncomfortable speaking in English??

Another communication issue: I specifically requested a quiet room. Nope - we had a room on the side of the hotel facing the tram tracks where the tram noise can be heard even with the double-paned window. If you are out during the day doing tourist activities, this might be ok. But we were there to nap in the afternoon after a long early morning train ride from Rome for a morning meeting. Not happy to hear the trams go by every few minutes! Did they pay attention to the customer request for a quiet room? Absolutely not.

Another request I made when booking was a room with a shower stall instead of a tub with shower because I have difficulty stepping over the high side of a tub. Another request Ignored. While the bathroom was nice and modern, it had the tub/shower combo that I didn’t want.

Lastly, this is the only hotel I have been in that does not provide any boxed tissues. I asked the front desk for fazzoletti and was told they don’t provide it. So I asked for another toilet paper and it never came. Luckily the housekeeper was cleaning the next room and gave me the badly needed toilet paper!

Improve your communications.

I was a little scared about staying here after reading the reviews about luggage and other items being stolen here. I even called our booking company to see if we could switch hotels but due to the cancellation policy we’re unable to. I have a feeling the hotel is reading the reviews though. When we arrived the room was not yet ready so they put the luggage in the reception area and ensured us they would be secure, they even put the claim sticker on the zipper so you could see that the bag was in fact not opened . As an extra precaution we put all of our valuable items in a back pack and took it with us as we explored the city. We also asked that they not clean our room as an extra measure. Overall we had no issues and all of our belongings that we left in the room were right where we left them anytime we can back to our room. The hotel is literally right across the street from the train station which was great!! And also across the street from the tram that takes you directly to the airport! It’s also a 15 or so minute walk to the duomo and all of other Florence’s main attractions. Definitely great location and the staff is super kind and extremely helpful! They explained to us how the tram system worked and even printed us out a map of the tram stops and told us which ones to take! I will say the only negatives were the very hard uncomfortable bed and the sense of worry related to leaving valuables in the room but other than that this place was great. Not sure if I would stay here again because of the bed and the uncertainty i really hope the hotel continues to take safety measures to protect guests, I saw on Tik Toc that luggage being stolen is happening at various hotels even those with 5 stars so you really never know. Again, luckily nothing happened to us and we took preventative measures for our...

Our stay at the Diplomat Hotel (by c-Hotels) was pleasant. My research makes it seem like c-Hotels took over the property not too long ago and started updating it. They own other hotels in Florence. From the outside the building isnt pretty, but the lobby, breakfast and bar areas on the ground floor were spotless. Room was a little small (but it's not like you're going to spend much time in it), just made it a little tight with our big suitcases. Also it looks like there are 2 buildings connected to each other so depending on what building you are in you may have to go down a steep ramp to your room (nothing horrible but for someone with difficulty walking it could be an issue); also, depending on the building, window will be high up, which can be good or bad, I couldn't see what was outside my window but I have a feeling it was for the better. My main problem with the room was the bathroom. Although the actual bedroom area was updated, the bathroom they did little work to. It still had an old bathtub/shower combo and the wall/floor tiles were also dated. It did look like they upgraded the sink and the fixtures. The only other thing was that the air-conditioning runs a little warm and we like to have it as cold as possible. But we were comfortable and it was not like it wasn't working. All in, the room was more than acceptable and clean. During our check-in and when we got drinks at the bar the staff was great! Friendly, pleasant, and ready to give recommendations. Right across the street from the train station in Florence so location was also convenient. Would give an extra half star if Google...
