This was an excellent stay. We started off a little rocky as we arrived an hour early and nobody was answering the buzzer where we were told to check in nor were they answering the phone. We went to eat at a nearby restaurant until the listed check in time. We tried calling a few times and left messages. We booked through booking.com so tried messaging through that without answer. Then we went back to the door with the buzzer and buzzed the next one down. It was answered right away and he came to greet us within a few minutes. He was apologetic at us not being able to get in touch. He had tried to call our foreign number to confirm we were coming. So a little frustrating to begin with but then he rolled our suitcase up to the hotel which is like an apartment hotel. There's a kitchen that everyone can share. Our room had a private bathroom. The room was decorated in excellent taste. It was quite spacious and very clean. The bathroom was quite large but the shower was small so it was a bit difficult getting a shower and moving around to get clean. There was plenty of space for our bathroom things. I was a little worried about any noise as we were on ground level with the street being right outside the window but I didn't hear anything. The whole village was very quiet as we did go in off season. Quite a lot of places were unfortunately closed but that didn't take away from our experience and the beauty of the village. It is not a far walk from the train station and you feel very safe in any part of the village regardless of time. As far as the bakery we did not get to experience that as I guess it was off season and the bakery was closed. We went into a small wine bar that had a simple breakfast laid out. I didn't realize that I could get a cappuccino so I poured coffee and then realized there was no milk in the container. I had a croissant which was disappointing. One of the main reasons I picked the hotel was because of the reviews on the bakery. We had been spoiled at two places before going to Monterosso. My husband slept in when I went to breakfast and I can't speak Italian so I didn't feel comfortable trying to ask anything. Overall it is a great place to stay. We would certainly return and stay in the summer. The owner was so pleasant once we met up with him. He was very cheerful and helpful. he gave us a map of the areas and circled places that offer the hotel visitors a discount. When it came to check out he happened to be there and helped us roll our suitcase out. He walked us to get breakfast and we did get cappuccinos then. I would recommend...
Read moreWe spent 2 nights at the newly renovated Antica Ancora. It has recently changed owners and Fabio, the new owner, has done a great job redecorating and updating the place - looking at the past pictures.||He welcomed us and gave us a lot of useful information about Cinque Terre. He also runs a Bakery which means you will have some of the best croissaints of your life if you choose to stay here. ||Location is very good, in the main street of Monterosso but quite high up which means there's little traffic of both people and cars. Perfect to explore Cinque Terre. ||Our room was small but funcional and very clean. Toilet was very good too with adequate toiletries. The property consists of 3 ensuite rooms with a common kitchen and terrace where you can have your breakfast and with cookies and coffee available 24/7. ||You might wonder why I give a rating of 3 stars. The only reason is - as mentioned on other reviews - the soundproofing of the room. Apartment is on a ground floor and you get noise to a disturbing level from the upper floors and from the common area - also obviously depends on how noisy are the other guests. There is some noise coming from the street but not too much. ||We decided to sleep with foam earplugs and it was acceptable that way, however I feel I have to mention this since noise level can make a big difference to a lot of people - specially light sleepers. ||If you are not concerned about this, then look no more, stay at Antica Ancora since it is a very good...
Read moreWe loved Antica Ancora! Fabio (the host) is a legend and an absolute gentleman who is very passionate about Monterosso. He gave us a great tour of the room and shared areas of Antica Ancora and then some awesome advice and local knowledge on Monterosso and the Cinque Terre. We got to a few spots lots of tourists wouldn't know about. He took great care of us and that made our stay even more amazing. His bakery is the best in the area and is where you get to take your little basket provided down for Fabio to fill up with whatever you like for your breakfast. ||The room itself is on the smaller side but was comfortable and cool after a hot day walking, the bathroom was spacious and everything was cleaned daily. ||The location is fantastic, right in the old town of Monterosso just up the hill away from the noise. As it's in a shared building there was a little noise from the front door and footsteps from above but we love in an apartment so are used to the noise of apartment buildings. If you need dead silence then maybe look elsewhere.|It is nothing flashy but great value for money and it made our time here amazing and we will never forget Fabio and his generosity! ||Would definitely stay here...
