Check-in was easy and the staff were very helpful. You can leave your bags in the luggage storage for free before check-in and go explore the city, which is a nice touch. The rooms seemed clean. Unfortunately, that's where the problems started... The bathroom is not in good condition. There was a strong smell of urine coming from the toilet. The shower floor was cracked in many places and looked moldy. But what's even worse - it's practically impossible to take a shower without flooding the entire bathroom. The shower floor is at the same level as the rest of the bathroom, with no slope or drop, and it's only separated by a curtain. As a result, the water doesn't drain properly and spreads everywhere. I informed the staff, and they gave me two bath mats, which helped a little and soaked up most of the water, but the problem came back every time someone took a shower. Sometimes I literally had to step into someone else's shower water when I wanted to use the bathroom - I hope I don't have to explain how gross that was ;) Also, there is only one toilet and one shower for eight people, and they are in the same room. So when someone is showering, you can't even use the toilet and have to wait (especially inconvenient in the mornings). There's AC in the room, but it doesn't work well, so it's still very hot and hard to fall asleep. The ventilation in the tiny 8-person room isn't good, and it gets stuffy and smelly fast. You also can't control the AC yourself. The room has lockers, but you need to bring your own padlock or buy one at reception. Towels are not provided, you can rent one for €2. The sheets seemed freshly washed and ironed, smelled clean, but they had stains (my roommate's sheet was stained with blood!) which was gross. The hostel lacks common areas. There's no lounge with couches to relax or eat in. There's also not really a kitchen - just a fridge and a microwave, and that’s it. It doesn't help much, especially since there are no plates or forks - you have to BUY them at the bar. There's also almost nowhere to eat (just a table with three bar stools near the fridge), but even that is often occupied by a buffet for tour groups when they eat there, so you can't really use it. You end up having nowhere to eat, since there's no lounge or shared space, as I mentioned. There is a hostel bar, but you can only sit there if you order something (and the prices aren't low - €7 for a drink…). This means you don't really have a place to chill except your room, which only has one small chair (for 8 people!), so you end up hanging out on your bed or spending the whole day outside the hostel. This completely goes against the idea of a hostel, where many people travel on a budget and want to prepare their own food. Local supermarkets have plenty of ready meals, breads, cheeses, etc., but it's useless when you have nowhere to prepare or heat them and you even have to buy your own utensils. If you're hoping to meet other travelers, don't count on it - there's no space to socialize, and most guests are either school groups or older solo men. The friendly staff and central location (though it doesn't help much when you can't make use of it and come back to rest during the day - no space to chill at the hostel) are the only real positives. Definitely wouldn't...
Read moreLovely place to stay. Lacked facilities that might have justified the price. Free breakfast and discount at the bar was great, obviously not world-class food but it set you up for the day and there was lots of fruit. Filter coffee included in buffet, €1,04 for a coffee at the bar Very good coffee at the bar, bar staff very friendly Good wifi. 12 beds to a room but beds had more privacy than I've seen in other hostels with dividers between adjacent bunks. Comfy beds Large drawers that lock, you can either bring your own padlock or buy one for €3 at reception. No trouble fitting a large bag inside Good vibe. Everyone was friendly and the social events were very nice and it was easy to connect with other people staying. The spritz crawl was wonderful and I gained insight into the city's history. The social dinner was great fun, but the food is deeply mediocre (worth the €5 to me, as it was all you can eat and got to chat to lots of people) Great location. ALDI five minutes away 24hr reception Drinkable tap water, although you have to get it from the bathroom sink Cleaned daily! Not enough bathrooms. One toilet per room + another for the whole floor. 7 rooms per four, each with maximum 12 people. This is not enough toilets for 84 people. Shower in each room also but there was a sign in it saying it was not recommended and to use the one in the floor's communal bathroom. One shower for 84 people. With awful water pressure to boot No soap in most of the bathrooms Barely a negative, but the drawer for the person on the bottom bunk is directly under the ladder for the top bunk. If it is open it's very hard to get down from the top bunk. No kitchen facilities. This was mentioned in the hostel's description but the reality was worse than expected. Plates and bowls were available on request, but often it took a while to get them. There's a microwave and a fridge. In a cheaper hostel I would have been fine with this, but for ~35 a night it felt a bit ridiculous. Especially as eating out was very expensive Overall positive experience, just didn't feel like good value for money. Would recommend for those...
Read moreI stayed at Hotello in May 2023 with a group of young students (13-14 years). But unfortunately Hotello is more a backpacker hostel, than a place to stay with young students. The location is great to visit the city but the hostel's infrastructure is poor and not able to serve all the groups staying there at the same time! The young staff team is very helpful but comes to its limits very often. The breakfast area can maybe serve one group or some individual guests at the same time, but not more. We and other groups were stressed every day to get places for our students at the breakfast buffet and there were just 2 two stressed service ladies in charge - way to little for so many guests! We also had dinner booked for our students but the quality of the food was very poor, it was almost cold and again - the staff tried their best, but was stressed by the mismanagement of the house. At night it was loud and chaotic. There were so many different groups of all age groups in the house and nobody seemed to care about the rules for a night rest. On Fridays the managment organises parties with bands playing in the court yard from 22:00 - 24:00! - that might be cool for young backpackers or local guests but not for groups with young students! It seems that the management squeezes in as many groups as possible - not taking care of the needs of the guests and staff menbers and the limits in the infrastucture of the house. And when asking for contact and a reply to an email complaint nobody was answering....
