If you'd like the full ryokan experience in Hakone but are somewhat confused about the choices out there and the vast price differences (like we were), then you should consider Omiya Ryokan. We certainly enjoyed our stay - rooms were pleasant, food (especially dinner) was delicious and besides the free private hot baths, the closest hot springs are a mere 2 minutes' walk away. Staff were generally helpful (one spoke decent English) and the place is a 10 minute bus ride from the main station. Read moreWe stayed for one night. It was expensive and the room was small and shabby, Toilets down the corridor, wash basin in a lobby area. The 'onsen' style bath was luke warm and tatty and they had the nerve to charge 200 Yen per towel. The rooms were reasonably clean but the staff were not particularly friendly and were ill-informed. The advised last bus back from town at 10ish was not actually running after 6.45pm and it is a hell of a lot further to walk up from the town than suggested - takes about 25 mins and its up a steep hill.
