We stayed here for 5 nights in September, and we chose to stay in a villa-style home over actual hotels due to our desire to avoid large crowds during the pandemic (such as at Hoshinoya Karuizawa, which has far too many guests as well as visitors for our comfort level, not to mention the rip-off prices they charge for their own villa rooms.) Overall, we were satisfied with our choice of staying at Morihaku.||||Morihaku is actually not an AirBnB style private rental home, but rather it's run by a company that manages 3 villas (all adjacent to one another) in a semi-serviced manner. They change the towels daily, and clean the rooms every other day. There is even an actual reception area, just like a hotel - not surprisingly, we never ran across the other guests there. Our rooms were fully furnished, and all necessities - such as toiletries (including toothbrush, toothpaste and razer/blades) and slippers - were provided. The only thing it lacked (compared to a hotel) were concierge and on-site dining. It certainly made for a relatively chore-free experience; we can just focus on chilling out in the villa or exploring Karuizawa and its surrounds.||||Some minor nitpicks: First, the room (ours was the "Peony Villa") was not particularly spacious. It was a mezzanine-style two-floor / 2BR accommodation, and while the living room ceilings was high, it still felt a bit tight inside. Also, the living room windows had a view of the neighboring property - in other words, you really had to keep the drapes closed if you wanted any sense of privacy, which is a bummer when you consider you're staying in a resort in the mountains. Finally, the final 500 meters of road leading to Morihaku are twisty and TIGHT. We had a Corolla, and flinched each time we made the final turn before arriving at Morihaku. Japan is known for narrow roads, but this almost took the cake. We were always worried about potentially scraping our rental car against the wall on the side of the road.||||Morihaku does not come cheap. But then again, Karuizawa is known as an upscale mountain retreat location for Tokyo escapees, so I'm not sure that you can avoid paying a princely sum for some modicum of comfort and space. To that end, Morihaku is a...
