I booked due to the many excellent reviews but now I think many of those reviews are questionable.

Tommy is very nice and friendly, the place is clean and the location is excellent.

BUT the very BASIC need of a travel or tourist is REST.

While the neighbourhood is quiet, please note that you can LITERALLY HEAR the other guests sneezed and snored next door or opposite u. You CAN HEAR THEIR EVERY MOVEMENT, EVERY STEP. Literally. Worst if they decide to chat ‘quietly’ into the night.

It’s a charming old house no doubt, but it is not suitable for more than a night stay as you won’t be able to sleep unless you are one of those that can sleep easily with noise around you.

So while u try to sleep, you are hoping that no one will continue chatting or decides to take turns to walk down and up the squeaky stairs to go the bathroom or wash up in the middle of the night. Even when they move inside the room, YES, you can HEAR.

I later saw a review that if you don’t need to sleep, yes, you can book this place. It’s quaint and charming. But if you need to rest and sleep, this is not a place for you. You can’t stay in your room to rest in the day even if you can’t sleep in the night.

Why? HOUSE RULES FOR CLEANING. Avoid this place and only trust reviewers that have been...

I really appreciate staffs, especially Chiharu and Tommy. I asked Chiharu about which places I should go in Kyoto and she brought a map and pointed several attractions and restaurants that she recommended. If she wasn't there I couldn't have enjoyed Kyoto. She is really kind and always tried to help even though there's a little language barrier. Tommy, he is the kindest Japanese I've ever met. After all, Kyoto person. I ordered one concert ticket to here during travel so I was supposed to get ticket but it wasn't arrived yet. I was not much good at Japanese so I just asked him to call post office, but he did not only call the office, but also tried find other way to get ticket. when we realized that ticket is in Oita Pref. so we can't receive it, I tried to buy new one on website. and he translated all informations and EVEN tried to use his credit card for making payment!(because my credit was not working for some reasons and I had only cash) I was really really moved and decided to write a review for him and staffs. Thank you so much Tommy, Chiharu, and all the staffs! If I didn't come this place I wouldn't have been able to keep my plan and had a good...

THIS PLACE IS THE BEST!! The man, Tommy, who runs it is so sweet, helpful, accommodating. I will miss his sandwiches in the morning- if he offers to make one for you, say Yes. They were sooo good. It was a great stay, I arrived after getting caught in a downpour and felt so bad about getting water everywhere but Tommy was so helpful and gave me a spare pair of shoes to wear since mine were soaked through. He gave restaurant recommendations, and I really appreciated his hospitality. The room was comfortable, it’s a quiet place, lights out was around 21:00 I think. It’s a good location, close to a station. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The only thing to be aware of is you cannot drop your luggage off early before the check-in time, and you have to be out of the hostel during the day from like 12-5 or...

First Japanese guest house I've been to and let's just say they set the bar really high for any future ones I visit. All the staff have been extremely kind and thoughtful, the service is really top notch. The location is great, very central and right near the station and subway. It's a very comfortable place to stay and extremely clean. They also offer free drinks (whiskey included). I asked Tommy the owner where I could find a coin laundry, he simply laughed and got me a basket and washed/dried and folded it for me. Absolutely blew away my expectations. Would gladly come again and recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto.
