The "Moxy Kyoto" is not far from Kyoto's castles and scores with very affordable rooms on weekdays, casual style and a prime location.
You reach the "Moxy Kyoto" in twelve minutes by train from Kyoto Station. Nijo Station is served by both the JR Sanin Line and the Tozai underground line. From there, it is 200 metres to the hotel with the striking neon pink lettering on the façade.
One of the city's main attractions, Nijo Castle, is just a quarter of an hour's walk from the "Moxy Kyoto". It is just under 300 metres to the covered Kyoto Sanjo Shopping Street with many shops and boutiques for every need.
The 158 rooms at the "Moxy Kyoto" are divided into the Ume and Sakura categories. They have 17 and 19 square metres respectively, which is almost generous by Japanese standards. There are also barrier-free rooms in the Ume category, but these do not have roll-in showers.
Rooms in both categories are available with either very comfortable queen-size beds or separate, wide twin beds. The bathroom with modern washlet WC and powerful rain showers is tiled in a retro-rustic style.
Wardrobe pins on the wall replace the wardrobe. With housekeeping in mind, you should think carefully about which items you pull out of your suitcase and drape on the wall between the window and the room door...
Contrary to many positive mentions on review portals, breakfast at the "Moxy Kyoto" is a disappointment. Those who like to start their day in Japan in peace and quiet and with the usual Japanese breakfast variety will be disappointed.
It is cramped, as everything is centred around the bar counter and a dining table that is far too small. In addition, there is a jostling and fighting for seats in front of the window or at the bar with "seat reservation cards".
What you get is a kind of continental breakfast with cereals, scrambled eggs of dubious texture, sausages and a few Japanese token offerings such as seaweed salad and rice, but not even decent miso soup. You'll have to pay 12 euros for that.
On weekdays and off-season you can get a room from as little as 72 euros (12,000 yen), at weekends it's 180 euros. Direct bookings almost always guarantee the best prices.
Travellers who are looking for an affordable hotel with a young, modern design and a playful buzz, which is easily accessible - and who place less value on a good...
Read moreThe decision to stay at the Moxy Kyoto Nijo was a last minute one. We had booked an alternate hotel but decided to utilize my Marriott Gold Status at the Moxy. Using points, I offset the price of our 2-night stay. I also let them know we were celebrating a birthday and anniversary which they surprised us with a hand written greeting on the room's mirror. They also gave us an extra round of "welcome drinks" at the bar aka hotel desk. ||The hotel is located near the JR Nijo Station down the street from Nijo Castle. We had transferred from Kyoto Station via the Shinkansen from Tokyo. The hotel is rather new and very hipster. The check in desk and bar is open 24 hours. It's a cute boutique hotel with loads of amenities. Our view wasn't the greatest but we had a lovely rain shower, Toto automatic toilet/bidet, comfy Queen sized bed, small fridge, free water upon request, clean pajamas, and lots of electrical outlets. They also had a laundry center that we didn't use. Let me just say, the welcome cocktails are kind of small so order the beer or wine instead to get a decent pour. We didn't have complimentary breakfast at this hotel so we opted to go out into the city for our meals and snacks. However, they did let us use the espresso machine which put out a fairly good cup of coffee or cappuccino depending on your desire. ||As we were close the Nijo Castle, we walked visited the castle. The hotel is close to the train that takes you to the bamboo forest as well. Just down the street is a shopping street and local supermarket where you can pick up fresh fruit. Since we were centrally located in Kyoto, we made a quick trip over to Osaka on our first evening there. Just know that the trains stop after a certain hour so don't stay out too late in a different city without a way to get back. We were lucky in that we made our way back on one of the last trains out of Osaka back. While there, we also visited Nishiki which was a good ways away so take the subway or bus because our walk back in the afternoon was long and a bit exhausting. Check out was also smooth. The staff we encountered were great. We had a good stay at the Moxy and definitely...
Read moreWonderful stay at the Moxy in Kyoto right across from Nijo station!
We stayed for 4 nights, this Marriott property is on the budget side but it is very clean, modern, and the rooms are so well designed! Although our queen size room was tiny the space was so well utilized and all the hanging space on the wall was very useful. The shower is a good size and everything was very clean.
Pyjamas are provided as well as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrushes etc. the mini fridge is small but empty so you can put your own purchases there. There is a small snack area in the lobby for small purchases, you have a family mart and a 7 Eleven about a 2 minute walk away. There is no room service and breakfast starts at 6:30AM. We did not get the breakfast as the selection was minimal for 2000 yen a person, there are many bakeries nearby the train station and convenient stores nearby.
The hotel staff was wonderful, we sent a message on the Marriott app before arrival asking about where we can get a massage as the hotel does not have a spa. The hotel staff quickly responded and when we checked in they helped us by calling a local place nearby and booking an appointment for us as well as providing us with directions!
The location is great, it’s a 2 minute walk from Nijo station. From Nijo station can take a local train 3 stops to get to Kyoto station. Lots of restaurants and groceries nearby.
There were a lot of tour groups staying at this hotel so the lobby was always busy. There is a bar/restaurant in the lobby, we did not eat there but the food selection looked good. We did receive a coupon for a free welcome drink for the bar when we checked in. Even with all the tour groups, the hotel room was very quiet and we did not hear anyone else from inside the room. There do seem to be some rooms on the first floor so maybe a good idea to request a higher floor in advance.
Would highly recommend this hotel if wanting to stay on the budget side but still have a nice...
