Our experience at Ishihara was truly enjoyable. Hiroko and her husband, Mr. Ishihara are both very kind and hospitable. Ishihara is a small Ryokan that is not advertised a lot, hence, it is more inconspicuous than the rest of the more well-known Ryokans. But that does not mean it is not on par with the rest. You will feel at home immediately with Hiroko's warm hospitality. She welcomed us with hot tea and japanese confectionary on the first day, and made sure that every time we returned back from travelling that we had cold water to drink from (due to the heat in the summer). She took the initiative to place our water bottles in the refrigerator and when we don't have water, she would bring cool barley tea for us to drink. ||||The breakfast in the mornings are a highlight as well, it is cooked by Mr. Ishihara himself and there is choice between Japanese or Western breakfast. Personally, we preferred the Japanese breakfast because it made the experience even more local. ||||As for the location, Ishihara is superbly located for tourists. It is a 5 minute walk to the Karasuma Oike Station, which is actually a very convenient station, being only around 3 stations away from Kyoto Station. The neighbourhood is very nice, as around a 10 minute walk will bring you to Teramachi, a great place to do your shopping. It is also very close to the Manga Museum (around 10 minutes), Gion (around 20 minute walk), and the Nishiki Market (around 15 minute walk). There are many restaurants around and there are several convenience stores located around (a 7Eleven right around the corner). ||||We highly recommend Ishihara! Thank you so much to Hiroko and Mr. Ishihara. We will definitely...

Read moreMy husband and other family just got back from|our trip to Japan. Ishihara was a highlight. Hiroko-san and her husband (I think) were so friendly and always there to see us off in the morning and welcome us home at night. We felt like family. She also helped us with our bad Japanese. He husband does paper craft as a hobby and gave us a beautiful box covered with pages of a Kabuki textbook. ||We had a regular room with private bath and toilet and a window that opened. There was no view but the room was clean and cozy, though a bit small. It is not a super fancy ryokan, but we got such a warm feeling it made up for it. The buckwheat pillows are on the small side but the futons were very cozy. ||My brother and his wife had the Akira Kurosawa room. It was much bigger with a view of the garden, but it was a bit smokey because it is right above the office where people smoked. We did not smell the smoke from our room. ||The ryokan is in a great location that is close to Teramachi street and the Nishiki Market. There is also a subway station within walking distance. ||We had western breakfast which was fine. I had another brother staying down the street who came to our ryokan to meet up often during out stay and they treated him as if he was also family. ||This place is highly...
