When visiting Japan we wanted to stay at a traditional house near the mountains. By searching around the internet we eventually ended up at this guesthouse in Matsushiro and it was absolutely great! The hostess was really welcoming, and after showing us the house she invited us to drink sake with the rest of the guests and her husband. It was so nice sitting in the common room discussing the town and what we should do the next day. One can clearly see she loves her town and wants us, the visitors, to like it as well. The following day she guided us around town, showing us among other things a martial arts center used by the ancient samurai family Sandana and a traditional hot spring(onsen) filled with friendly locals, all of this free of charge. It is a little bit too cold in the room in winter and there is only a shower in the hotel, but there are some onsen facilities near the guesthouse, like 5 minute ride, they can give you a ride there if you ask, so that is not a big deal at all.
