JINYA Sunset Inn by Murasaki — Hotel in Takayama

The beds are really comfortable, and the room is nice with windows that open. It is a really cute place and a great location. The shower is luxurious and the room was very clean. However, they do not have staff working in the lobby. Someone remotely walks you through the check in process, which made it feel less safe as a female solo traveler. Although I did not have any issues while staying here and the neighborhood is very safe, I wish they had someone working in person. It was mostly male backpackers staying here, and if someone had followed me into the lobby, there was no one around. I chose to not do laundry or visit the rooftop bar due to this, as it didn't feel very safe; I didn't want to advertise I was alone or spend too much time in the shared space. It also quickly smelled like dirty feet throughout, as people are required to put their shoes in cubbies in the hallways. Had staff been on hand, they probably could've addressed the problem to an extent. There were also some drunk girls that were really loud running up and down the stairs. Very comfortable, simple room just a few blocks from the tourist center of town. There is a kitchen and free laundry (vending machine for detergent). You check in via a tablet/video chat, but the staff are just down the road at one of the company’s other inns. You get vouchers for a simple breakfast at that inn as well. Overall comfortable and very nice accommodation in Takayama!

I mainly want to write this review to thank their inn and their staff, particularly Ryutaro. We shipped our luggage to Takayama from Osaka. Apparently one of our suitcases unzipped in transit and several items fell out, including my laptop. The Inn staff went above and beyond in helping us. Because we don’t speak Japanese, they helped us to file a police report and called the luggage transport company on our behalf. In the end nearly all of our items were found by the luggage company and brought to the police station - Ryutaro even came to meet us to pick them up. You guys really helped save our trip! It was really a new experience that we had remote check in. Surprisingly it was fast and efficient. We are also impressed by the detailed instructions given, there is no need to have a staff physically present to explain all the information.

Just like what the previous guests have mentioned, the stairway is extremely steep. Don't bring heavy luggage to the room.

The washing machine and dryer are free of charge. The kitchen is also well equipped and clean.
