We had a great stay here. The owner was really helpful with any questions you may have about your time in Japan and had some great recommendations. He speaks perfect English as he went to high school in New Zealand! We walked everywhere we wanted to from here. Ten minutes walk from the bus/train station, the same to the old town and a 30 minute walk to the Hida historic village, which is worth a visit as a cheaper alternative to Shirakawa-go, which is an expensive bus fare away. The hostel also has decent bikes for hire for 800 yen a day. There's free tea and coffee, hot water, a toaster, microwave, fridge and hot plate, so you can make some small meals if you wanted to. The pods were probably the most spacious I've been in so far, with plenty of space on one side of the mattress, a big shelf, small cupboard and two hangers. The mattress was also really comfy. There's two showers downstairs, although I only used it once and instead went to the onsen across the road, which is only 400 yen and a fun local experience. Only downside was our dorm of eight was uncomfortably warm overnight for the three nights we were there. There was an AC unit which staff control, but it never felt like it was putting out much cold air. Other than that it was a great place to stay.

This hostel is very good for the very affordable price! I would not recommend it to people used to a high standard or people that need their own private bathroom or toilet - but if you're flexibel and can get used to share, it's perfect. The place is very good located - nearby old town, morning market, Hida Folk Village and just a 10 minute walk away from the train/bus station. It's also clean and everything is as good as new (they opened up in february 2018). And you cannot beat the cheap price! Also, the staff is very friendly, helpful and fluent in English.

Hands down one of the best modern hostels you will stay at in Japan. Plenty of room (bunks are taller than five feet), clean and extremely friendly staff. Better yet - Cup of Tea is conveniently located right next to all the major Takayama sightseeing spots. The team will tell you whether to give certain spots a miss and also have plenty of recommendations in and around the region. I’ll be back when the festival is on.

We stayed at Cup of tea for 2 nights and we had lovely time. The hostel is situated very close to all the important tourist spots, but in a quiet neighborhood, meaning that you are only few minutes away from the old town, but you don't get the tourist buzz from people passing by. Right across the street there is a local onsen so if you've never tried one in Japan, this might be your place!||||The hostel itself is small and ran by Tats - Japanese with loads of international experience. It's very inspiring talking to him. It also gives you a sensation of a family-ran place. Everything is very personalized and you can see that Tats really put a lot of effort to make everything practical and comfortable for his guests. Ask him for his recommendations, we followed his advice and managed to avoid big crowds while seeing truly magical places in Takayama (specially the temples walk was!!). ||||We stayed in 8-beds dorm and even though the room itself is small, the bed area is really big and has everything you might need: good light for reading, warm and cozy bed linen, power sockets, curtain to give you privacy. The wi-fi is also great and the signal reaches the bedrooms. The showers are big, water pressure is great. There is also fully equipped kitchen and free tea/coffee all day - a really nice gesture! Cup of tea is impeccably clean. Apart from dorms, there is 1 family room and tatami room on the ground floor. There is also a lovely zen garden. ||||Overall a great stay and we definitely...
