We arrived and I went it and I saw my name near the main entrance on a shot rack.||The manageress who is married to the manager greeted me and showed me about. ||She showed me my room as I was staying a solo traveller and it was a big room as per my pictures. Read moreWe booked this Ryokan as it was in our price range and offered transport to see the snow monkeys but what we got was so much more.||A truly unforgetful experience. We stayed 2 nights and on our first night snow monkeys came and watched us from a wall while we were in the outdoor onsen then came and sat outside our room window complete with babies in tow. They came back 4 times during our visit. On the second night it snowed while we were in the outdoor Onsen- just a magical experience.||The owners are a lovely welcoming couple but as we had booked at short notice, and visited over a weekend, they were unable to provide Japanese meals which we were disappointed to miss out on- we found a great sushi place instead that made up for our disappointment.||Our room comfortably fitted a family of 4, looked out onto the quaint Shibu Onsen street and had a toilet and hand basin in room as well as a fridge, hot water urn and TV. We used the male and female onsens downstairs for showering- which the kids decided wasn't nearly as bad as they thought it would be.||Another highlight was getting dressed in traditional gowns and capes ( it was snowing) wearing clogs and testing out all the locked public onsens on Shibu Onsen street. This is only available if you stay in one of the Ryokans. There are 9 you can access with your key and they all claim different healing properties- gout, neuralgia, skin conditions etc. Be warned- you may need to add cold water as some onsens were very hot but it was such a lovely experience. In the end though we decided the best onsens were the ones in our Ryokan. ||Loved that freshly brewed coffee was provided free in the foyer each morning.||The lovely owner both picked us up and dropped us back at Yudanka station ( 5 minutes drive away) and drove us to the entrance of the snow monkeys and we walked back to the Ryokan ourselves( he would have picked us up).||If staying with a family I would suggest packing a few snacks as not close to convenience stores when snowing.||Our room was warm and cosy with tatami mats on the floor and traditional futon beds with buckwheat pillows. We were surprisingly comfortable and really enjoyed our first traditional sleep experience.||I would highly recommend this Ryokan for comfort, location and the lovely service. It is a humble property but well...
