HostelKZ — Hotel in Almaty

This place is awesome!!!

First, the LOCATION is GREAT for tourists. It's just a 5-10 minute walk away from the famous, gorgeous Russian Orthodox Zenkov's Cathedral, the monument of Panfilov, the Green Bazaar, and the museum of musical instruments (and the Central Mosque is just 5 min away from the Green Bazaar). I LOVED these places so we LOVED how easy it was to walk from HostelKZ to these beautiful places. I also enjoyed the walk along Valikhanov Street (it's so cozy and peaceful, made me feel like I was walking in some 90's movies) to Panfilov Park. It was summer but the air was so fresh and cool.

Second, the PEOPLE. When I was there, there were Kazakh university students who lived there long term. Living with them helped me catch a glimpse of how the locals lived, there were also other backpackers with amazing stories to share. They didn't have a printer but helped me print my train tickets at another place free of charge.

Third, the FACILITY. Having been to a number of hostels of the same price range, I think the facility here is pretty decent. Some may find the place a bit cramped and old but I think overall, houses in Almaty are just like this (I visited friends in another hostel who paid more and their shared rooms are around the same size). I didn't see many modern buildings in the neighborhood. It's a new hostel so the beds and mattresses are still very clean and new.

Lastly, words cannot describe my GRATITUDE to them. I missed my train from Almaty to Astana and was breaking down at the train station. I contacted them and they immediately stepped in to help. They calmed me down and suggested alternative ways to get to Astana. It was clear that taking a car was the only option, so they even helped me call 4-5 drivers on InDriver to find the right person for me. And this was at midnight! Thanks to them, I got everything sorted out within 2 hours.

Even though they speak little English, they make the BEST effort to try to communicate with me. When I was in distress, Madina, the manager, even asked his brother, who could speak better English, to call to talk to me and arrange for alternative transport. The warmth of their hearts cross all language barriers.
