Disappointed and Disrespected — Staff Event Treated Like Nothing

We recently organized our company’s annual dinner at Paramount Hotel and had an extremely disappointing experience.

The event setup was a disaster — the screen was broken, the sound system had not even been tested beforehand, and there was no proper support. Every time we asked for help, we were just pushed around from one person to another with no one taking responsibility.

During venue decoration, the air conditioning wasn’t even turned on, making it extremely uncomfortable for everyone. No communication, no assistance — everything had to be arranged by ourselves.

They even charged us just for using the lift during setup. Fine, we can still accept that — but the worst part was the attitude of the staff. The receptionists were all sitting at the front desk, playing on their phones, watching me struggle alone with a heavy trolley, and no one came to help.

When I approached the manager, instead of offering support, she belittled our event by saying, “Annual dinner? Only 7 tables, also consider big event?” I was really shocked and disappointed. Even though it was only 7 tables, our annual dinner is an important occasion for our staff — with recognition programs, lucky draws, and celebrations to appreciate everyone’s hard work. Imagine how heartbreaking it is to hear someone look down on our event like that, especially when it holds so much meaning for our team.

It gets even worse — the manager tried to pressure us by claiming she is “very familiar” with our big boss, trying to use that so-called relationship to intimidate us. But after checking with my father (the boss), he doesn’t even know who she is! Clearly, she was just trying to use fake connections to bully us. When she realized I am the boss’s daughter, her attitude immediately flipped 180 degrees, suddenly becoming polite and helpful. If I wasn’t the boss’s daughter, does that mean my team would just have to accept being treated so badly?

Absolutely terrible service and experience. We will never come back again. Totally unacceptable for any event, no...

After Kuala Lumpur, I flew directly to Sibu with Air Asia and stayed two nights in Sibu in this hotel. Having prepaid for my stay, for just 43 euros all-in, altogether, for two nights, via a Dutch hotel booking website, back home in Amsterdam before i left for my trip, I was absolutely delighted with my room and actually with my whole stay in the Paramount Hotel. The hotel reception could also get me a Grab car within 5 minutes so i had no complaints whatsoever other than the fact that one or two of the reception staff might probably has/have to brush up his or her spoken English, so as avoid any would-be future misunderstandings with the hotel guests, this being apparently mostly a business travellers hotel (as Sibu apparently has very few tourists!). But the whole reception team was actually mostly very kind and helpful during my stay. Extra bonuses for me were the simply wonderful river view from my room as well as the various new developments right behind this hotel, with quite many trendy and hip restaurants and cafes. For in-house guests, without breakfast being included in the room rate, a good set breakfast (both eastern or western) can be ordered on the same morning, at the cafe next to the reception, for just 18 ringgit...

1 night stay at 2 deluxe room (each with 1 king + 1 single) for 5 adults. We arrived in the morning and was allowed to check in for both rooms. Reception staff is friendly. Deposit needed for check in. Good view from high floor room.||||Requested for non-smoking rooms but it seems that all rooms are smoking rooms as astray is found in both of our rooms. One of our room is full of left-over cigarette smell, where we have to leave the window open for few hours to get it ventilated. Air-conditioning in room is working fine, room is generally clean, but found one small lizard in one of the room. Room is spacious for 3 adults. Free cable channel and free wifi provided. Room lighting is good with centralized control panel next to bed. The king sized bed on our room in 7th floor is old and uneven. ||||bathroom is clean, with amenities provided.||||breakfast provided is better than I expected. Mainly local dishes (porridge, fried noodles etc) with fruits and some desserts. ||||Check out is fast.||||Overall, value for money hotel. 24hr self service laundry can be found next to hotel. Parking coupon (purchased from nearby pondok) is needed for your car for weekday 8am -12pm, 1.30pm to 5pm. Short drive to mall. 10minute drive to temple and...

Booked a queen bedroom, the room has a bad odor. The hotel did not mention anything about the restaurant's service suspension including room service, even though there is a menu in the room that lists available service hours from 10am-9pm daily. When I went downstairs to the restaurant to ask, I was told that the kitchen was closed due to Ramadan preparations for buka puasa. "We’re very busy preparing for buka puasa and have no time to cook other food.", they said. The attitude was terrible. Fail to provide catering service was your problem, not ours. As hotel guests, we should be able to order something to eat or even just have a cup of tea at the hotel’s own café. This is completely unacceptable. Besides, the staff informed that each room only can be given one extra pillow even though you've booked a triple room. Each person only get one pillow, and one extra allowed, following pillows cost RM5 per unit. Dont need to mentioned the attitude of the staff while giving such information, the policy itself was ridiculous. Such a big and grand looking hotel, cannot afford 2 pillow per customer, maybe it is my problem to having high expectation. I will never come back again.

This wasn’t our first- time stay at this hotel. My family and I got a room of 1 king-size and 1 single beds for RM150 with complimentary breakfast for two, which I think quiet reasonably. The room is spacious and clean. We got a room with a park view ( don’t know what’s its name) but sadly the pond at the park is dirty, quite an eyesore actually. No bellboy service (coz I didn’t see one the whole time during my stay. Ample parking space but make sure to put up parking coupons during weekdays as they are belonged to Sibu Municipal Council. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby. And self- service coin laundry just a stone throw away from the hotel. On the whole, I would say my stay there with my family was pleasant and I have no major complaints. Will I go to this hotel again? Sure, why not.

I had been staying in this hotel whenever I come to sibu for the past couple of years. It used to be decent. Clean but not really clean but what can you expect from an old hotel right? But the problem is, there hasn’t been any effort to improvise at all. This time things got worse. Staff, when I called in to book, I got a rude one. Well, for the room, please see the pictures and judge it yourself. For me, my opinion, this hotel should really consider refurbishing and doing major clean ups. The good thing I really like about this hotel is the super cool ac which is really important to me and also the room service food which never fail to impress me.
