The Sekeping properties (Penang, KL, Ipoh, and in the jungle) all look fantastic on their website. Our recent two-night stay in the Sekeping Pinang was our first stay at one of their locations, and we were not disappointed. It is a seriously cool & hip architectural remodel of an old Chinese shop front, completely gutted and remodeled on the inside into a series of small, but very well thought-out rooms. The best way to describe it is like a dormitory that YOU would build if you were doing it for yourself. Excellent use of natural light, nice fittings, well located to old George Town sights. Much nicer than a typical hotel.||||Note: There is no full time staff, and the caretaker speaks little/no English. There are no TVs and no amenities. Parking is on the street, and can be crowded. There is a "ghost museum" just opposite that attracts a crowd. Down the road on the opposite side of the street is a cheap and cheerful Chinese street food cafe with seriously good duck rice (that's all they serve). RM5 per portion. worth a quick bite. Around the corner the other way (5 min walk towards the temples) is "The Book Sandwich Cafe", which is excellent. ||||The sister property (Sekeping Victoria) is nearby, too, and has an exceedingly pleasant cafe. ||||Word to the wise: the "glass room" is exactly that: a fishbowl like room with two beds. Kind of cool, but not a lot of privacy. The other rooms are very nice. Copper plumbing fixtures are a particularly nice touch.||||This is how eclectic & trendy SHOULD be done. HIGHLY...
Read moreI really enjoyed my time here. George Town is a UNESCO heritage site and Frenz is an old building that has been very smartly converted to accommodation. It's design aesthetic is really unique.
I saw a review here, giving out about the walls of the room 🤣 Don't stay here if you're not up for quirky, old and unique! The house 'rules' are standard and common sense and etiquette in a shared space.
Safety: I'm a solo female and felt very safe in the property and around the surrounding area.
Location: 10/10 You are within walking distance to everything GT has to offer. Great coffee shops, restaurants and bakery on the same road.
Room: Comfortable bed, air con and enough space for your bag and personal items. Shared bathroom.
Be aware: As already outlined in the description of this property, the walls are not sound proof. You are relying on self aware and considerate neighbors.
Cleanliness: 10/10 spotless.
Value for money:...
Read moreThere were mice in my room every day even though I didn't bring food in my room. There was a sticky mat outside of my room to catch critters so I watched a mouse struggle to live for over 24 hours before they cleaned it up and put a new mat down :(. The sound proofing is non-existent so you will hear everything from your neighbor watching Netflix to the people on the street having a conversation while they walk by. It wasn't a restful stay for me due to these things. The drywall falls off the wall as the people above you walk through their room. However I will leave a few stars because the location is great, the bed was comfy, and the Aircon worked well. I just think that they should lower the price to put the price/quality ratio...
