Full honest review. So many things to love about this place! It's really a beautiful historical building. It's been kept immaculately clean and the upkeep of such an old building is reasonable. Cannot expect everything to be new and modern.
For example, there's no shower curtain so the whole bathroom gets wet. The rack to hang the towel is near the toilet so you have to walk across the very slippery floor after bathing. I would suggest bringing your own bath slippers to prevent any accident.
The location is the best with a Korean bbq next door, a nearby petrol station and a huge night food court.
It's a bit overwhelming in the beginning...if you don't know the routine of self check-in. A worker will ask for your IC. He will take a picture of it along with RM50 deposit. Because of the privacy data act in Malaysia, most would not like this arrangement... because of scammers, having someone you don't know take a picture of your IC can be quite frightening. But the picture is for the owner to see that you have obtained your key and your deposit is with the worker. This will be given back to you once the worker has checked your room for damages.
Because there's no reception, it's best to let the owner know the time you plan to check out. You can self checkout but if a worker isn't around, the owner will have to bank in your deposit (so having to give your banking information to someone that already has a copy of your IC is probably not the wisest thing to do). So there is a bit of a waiting period for checking out.
If you come for more than 1 night, they will make up your room for a cleaning fee of RM20 if you request it. Otherwise it's best to keep your own room cleaned. And even though there's no free coffee/tea that most hotels offer, there are 2 huge vending machines that offer all kinds of drinks (including beer) and snacks and even simple medicine. And because there's a strict no smoking policy, the place always smells clean.
The Aircon works well and the beds are moderately comfortable.
This place is really ideal for foreigners who want to stay at a historical site. It's family friendly. Young ones enjoy playing on the massive staircase. And maybe ideal for many friends to gather and hang out in a prime spot in Penang. I don't think I would recommend it for older ones or people that are in Penang to work as there's no one to monitor the noise level at night. But the wifi works well so if you need it for...

I rang up the place and said will be late. I ask per for extension. I.was shocked of my life. Per hour RM 30. I done till 2pm. ( RM 60 ). Again i called up the incharge and said i couldnt make it . So extend till 4pm. Another RM 60. Total rm 120 for 4 hours of extension which is equals to 1 day stay. When i bring up the issue to the incharge, she said each hotel has different policy and rules written on the back of door.
