Update: Haven't been here in a while. We always prefer the cafe on the first floor rather than the roast place downstairs. The service is quick and kind. The food is excellent✔👍. This time we ordered the Pork Chop Spaghetti with black pepper sauce, Sweet and Sour Chicken Rice and the Braised Pork with Scrambled Egg and Rice. All of them were very well cooked and the first two dishes in fact were ample portion sizes, too😍. Only the pork dish was a bit stingy. Just four pork pieces 😢. Please do consider adding a couple of pieces more to accompany the wonderful egg and the sauce. We'll definitely like to come again.
Old review: Awesome dinner with family at this lovely, unpretentious place in Tanjung Tokong. Great food, good drinks and quick, caring service. We ordered the sweet and sour chicken, pork in vinegar with rice, and braised pork with omelette and rice. Very well prepared, the sauces were excellent and just the right portion sizes for us. We also ordered the fried milk sticks and the fried dumplings. The milk sticks were new to us and we loved them. The dumplings came with an excellent dip with fresh ginger. What's not to like! Our drinks were served cold and were very refreshing. All of this without drilling a hole in the pocket. Hope Penang continues to have more such places instead of some of the pretentious cafes sprouting up everywhere without quite knowing what they actually want to be. Keep it simple. That's the secret. We are sure...
Read moreTong Seng Roasted House in Tanjung Tokong is a spot worth checking out if you’re craving classic roasted meats. I tried their chicken rice, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The rice itself was fragrant and flavorful, with just the right amount of seasoning, while the chicken was smooth and tender, making it easy to enjoy. Their roasted pork stood out the most — the skin was wonderfully crunchy, and the meat beneath was soft and juicy, giving a satisfying bite. To complement the meal, I tried the sour soup, which carried a nice balance of spiciness and tanginess. It paired well with the chicken rice and added a refreshing contrast.
The wan tan noodle, on the other hand, had mixed results. While the taste of the sauce and dumplings was enjoyable, the noodles carried a slight sulfur aftertaste. It might be better if the noodles were soaked or treated before serving, as that could make the dish more appealing. On a brighter note, the restaurant offers complimentary herbal tea when you sign up as a member, which is a nice touch. Overall, Tong Seng Roasted House delivers decent roasted meat dishes with room for small...
Read morePenang has many BBQ meat restaurants (燒臘飯店) which mainly serve the Malaysian style BBQ porks (燒肉,义燒),roasted duck and chicken rices. For me, the Guangdong and Hong Kong style BBQ meats are more authentic. Although it is not very healthy, the fatty BBQ pork (半肥瘦义燒)is the best. The BBQ meat rices served by Tong Seng (have a number of branches in Penang) have the taste of the Hong Kong style BBQ meats. This is not easy to find in Penang. The chicken rice was also served with the minced ginger paste (薑蓉) which is not commonly found in Penang. One thing very good is that the BBQ sauce was served separately so that you could added to the rice if you considered you need more. This catered for individual customer tastes. The Chai Boi soup (菜尾湯)was good also.
The Wanton Mee is of standard quality. Although the taste of the dry wanton noodle sauce was good, I found that the noodles were a bit hard. If it is cooked a little bit long, it will be perfect. Overall experience...
