Upon arrival, the hotel made a great first impression with its charming exterior and inviting atmosphere. The lobby had a welcoming feel, but unfortunately, the check-in process was not as smooth as expected. Getting the attention of the staff took longer than it should have, which was frustrating after a long journey. However, once engaged, the staff members were friendly, accommodating, and genuinely eager to assist.
The rooms were decent in size and layout, but several aspects left much to be desired. The bathroom was noticeably outdated and in desperate need of renovation. Additionally, the in-room fridge did not work well, which was particularly inconvenient given the warm climate. Essential amenities such as hair conditioner and toothbrushes were not provided, which is disappointing for a hotel of this standard.
The outdoor bar area had great potential, but it lacked a few key elements that would significantly improve the experience. The absence of ceiling fans made sitting there almost unbearable due to the heat. Furthermore, the drinks were not chilled properly, and there’s nothing worse than being served a warm beer in sweltering conditions. On a positive note, the Negronis were fantastic—easily one of the highlights of the stay.
When it came to dining, the food was average at best. The meat was dry and overcooked. The burger I ordered the following day, had a bun that resembled a hockey puck—stale and far from enjoyable. However, breakfast had a good variety of options and well-prepared dishes.
The hotel did have some great facilities, particularly the laundry service and spa, both of which were excellent. However, the gym lacked air conditioning, making workouts uncomfortable and impractical in the heat. The swimming pool was another letdown, as it was in need of upgrades to enhance both its cleanliness and overall appeal.
I’ve rated the hotel three stars. It has some redeeming qualities, including friendly staff, a great spa, and a solid breakfast. However, the outdated rooms, lack of essential amenities, underwhelming dining options, and the poor state of key facilities prevent me from justifying a higher rating. With some improvements, this hotel has the potential to be a much...
Read moreBooking was done for 2 adults. Only one robe, one pair of slippers received. Only one bottle of water. When informed at the reception, they disregarded the complaint, saying that this is how it should be. However, when I came there a year ago, we were offered TWO (which makes sense, for TWO. ADULTS. - see below picture).
The socket needs to be upgraded, I had to remove the telephone in order to charge my phone. Not much variety for the breakfast ‘buffet’.
The TV is not the best for entertainment; limited channels and only “Kung Fu Panda” playing over and over again.
Last time I went there the pool was dirty and even spotted a chameleon too. Despite turning on all the lights, the room was still kinda dark.
There is NO douchette in the toilet, which makes no sense - do you expect me to use toilet paper?
I would also like to point out that one year ago, when I stayed at Suffren, the bacon was served close to the other food items during the breakfast buffet (not separate) which is not ideal for muslim clients. In fact even when eating during dinner, all we could smell was bacon and we ended up having to leave early.
Additionally, this time, the bacon was not served close to the other food items. Though I am not sure if this is standard practice or just my lucky day.
I also called them for room service - I had to call MULTIPLE TIMES in order for them to pick up. Their number was unavailable. Despite all the different codes provided, no one picked up the phone. I had to call reception ON MY PHONE to finally reach someone. They gave me the number for room service and what is really irritating about this is that I was asked to PHYSICALLY go downstairs to the restaurant for my order!! This makes absolutely NO SENSE, given that you guys provided the menu for “room service” but then I had to go there? Explain the logic!! I had just finished my massage and after my shower wanted to relax in my room but had to change and go order. “ROOM SERVICE”, next time call it restaurant service while you’re at it.
On the good side, the spa pool looks amazing and is clean. For facial and massage the spa is a must. Very relaxing. I would not book again because it’s not...
Read moreAfter an inauspicious start to our stay, we arrived at the hotel at 4am and we weren't checked in until after 6am, the night clerk having gone awol, we settled in to a decent breakfast before a well earned morning nap.
Our airline(the always confused KQ) changed our arrival time from 1pm to 2am so we had to pay for an extra night so as to be able to enter our room upon our arrival. We had considered getting an airport hotel but the thought of a double hop seemed more trouble than it was worth.
We had a "garden view" room which in reality was just a patch at the backside of the hotel the more interesting view being that of the mountains surrounding the capital in the background. Given that all the activities for the hotel take place at the front this was not a bad thing and we enjoyed relative quiet.
The rooms were well laid out and were comfortably sizable. The only downside was the smell of cigarette smoke that would permiate from neighbouring rooms at certain times of the day.
Service at the hotel was generally good though we found the limitations around when one could have meals, lunch 12:00-2:15pm only, to be at odds with a holiday program, especially if you had a late breakfast. We couldn't establish whether this was the normal program or just part of of the new year timetable where even ordering from the menu required checking with the chef as to whether that particular item was on offer that day.
Ordering food and drinks at the poolside required the guest to go and place the order at the main bar which was a nuisance, and again one can't be sure if this was how it normally works or just a limitation for the time of year.
The staff with a few exceptions were extremely amiable and the reception team, sans check in, were particularly accommodating affording us a late checkout which went some way to making up for the first day shenanigans.
The location of the hotel right next to the citys' waterfront area meant that one could explore many dining and entertainment options. The hotels' free water taxi service was particularly handy in...
