I'm going to call this a "live" review, as I have just had dinner here. Actually, I have visited the hotel on numerous occasions over the past few weeks, having breakfast, lunch, and dinner. ||The building is stunning, as you would expect. However, the "service" is the most bizarre I have ever experienced. Some excellent, other times, absolutely perplexing. ||Breakfast is pretty good, a great selection of hot and cold food, cereals, pancakes, and fruit. Omelettes made to order, and everything ran like clockwork. ||Lunch/dinner was a completely different story. Here's a run down of yesterday and tonight's service. So, last night we had dinner and drinks. We were given a drinks menu and a food/snack menu. Food and drinks were, as always, faultless. When it came time to ask for the bill, things took a frustrating/comical turn.|| First attempt, asked the staff member for the bill. A few minutes later, she came up and meticulously cleaned our table. Taking great care to make eye contact and ensuring that not a crumb remained. She then walked away, no bill. ||Second attempt, again asked for the bill, with me apologising, that no, I hadn't asked for her to come and clean the table. That would be rude as far as I'm concerned. Waited for what seemed like ages, then she came to the table with a glass of beer that I hadn't ordered. She apologised and left, waited again, and again, no bill. Third time lucky, asked again and finally received the bill. ||Tonight, I came in and asked a staff member for the drinks and snack menu. She acknowledged me and said she would bring them to my table. I sat down and waited. Nothing. The lady I spoke to just walked away and started to "arrange" the tables in the restaurant. I waited for ten minutes before going back to the bar to chase down some other menus. The lady returned, and I again asked for menus. This time, she said that she would have to check with the kitchen!||So what happened the first time?||She eventually came to our table with a handwritten list, no menu. Despite the fact that throughout the previous week, we had no problem getting our hands on an actual menu. Anyway, orders were eventually placed, and the food was, as usual, fantastic. At one point, I asked for two glasses of wine, as we had just finished ours. The waiter came with a bottle and proceeded to refill our used glasses. In all my years, in all the restaurants I have dined in, all over the world; I have never had wine poured from a bottle into used glasses. Fine, if I had bought the bottle, but I ordered two fresh glasses of wine. And I was expecting two fresh glasses with that wine. ||Would they have refilled our used cocktail glasses or coffee cups?||This was exceptionally bizarre. ||We are here for a while, and because the food is so good, we will be returning. If only out of curiosity, to see what strange antics the staff will indulge in next. ||I'll post later . ....
Read moreLots to like about this hotel:|1. Executive lounge - was in Mauritius for business and was given a free upgrade to an executive room which meant access to the executive lounge - essentially free snacks and drinks all day - wonderful. Our room also had a minibar which we were told was also free (soft drinks and some alcohol). They tried to charge us for this on check out but when we challenged it, it was kindly removed. |2. Location - great location on the marina and outside there are restaurants, shops, a craft market for souvenirs, ATMs, ice cream parlours etc. Very convenient |3. Sister hotel - guests have access to the facilities of Le Suffres hotel which is the neighbouring sister hotel. There’s a water taxi to take you between the two hotels. Very cool! When the boat doesn’t operate, they arrange for a shuttle bus. The sister hotel has a really good sushi restaurant which is much more affordable (and better) than the one in the main hotel. Pool is slightly better than main hotel but it’s a shame it doesn’t make use of the beautiful view , and is not heated, so too cold for us to use. It’s essentially blocked by a stone wall. |4. Service - faultless service as the staff couldn’t do enough to help. This is where the 5 stars comes in. We enjoyed the homemade gin in the lounge and it was arranged for them to make us some bottles to purchase and take home, for example. ||Some cons:|1. Catamaran - the website tells you that there’s a free boat ride that takes place twice a week in the sunset. We asked and apparently it’s not operational for licensing reasons. This was a big draw for us initially. Management should remove this from the website as it’s deceptive. ||2. The hotel is dated - whilst clean, the bathrooms are a bit old, we had this incredibly loud HVAC system in our room which was so loud even when the AC was off. We didn’t want to move rooms but it was loud white noise which may put guests off. ||3. Pool is terrible - for a 5 star hotel, you’d expect a better pool. The pool (if you want to call it that) is not really useable - which is presumably why you can use facilities in the sister hotel. We never saw anyone in it. The gym is small (and hot) but decent equipment. ||Overall, an enjoyable stay - definitely worth getting the executive...
