Ajijic (on Lake Chapala, one hour from Guadalajara, 40 minutes from the international airport) is popular with Canadians and Americans, who live there year round or part-time. ||||Because of the large expat community, prices are a bit higher than nearby towns. Ajijic has many excellent restaurants, shops and art galleries that are inexpensive, but only for those with dollar incomes. ||||Notwithstanding, it retains the charms of a small town, and it reflects the best of Mexican culture and its beautiful people. Locals and the expat community live somewhat segregated lives, but if you speak a little Spanish, it is easy to make rewarding friendships with local residents.||||The hotel has huge rooftop terraces with incredible views of the lake, town and surrounding mountains. The rooms have TVs and decent internet, otherwise basic, but offer incredible value considering the cost. ||||On some other travel websites, a few folks complained about the church bells ringing several times a day. I liked it. If you think it may really bother you, don't be tempted to overlook this unique and historic Ajijic hotel option; just bring a set of earplugs :)||||Clientele is a mixture of short and long term expat residents and folks from Guadalajara who come for the weekends. For those who like to party, go from November 20th to the end of the Christmas season - bandas play until well past midnight in the Plaza, full of temporary kiosks with local food and drinks, parades and fireworks. Couldn't have been a better location, close to everything. If I'm being critical, there was really loud music next door a few of the nights. I think our room was the closest to it. Friendly staff.
