So you’ve already chosen Merida as your vacation place. And now you’re looking for just the right place to stay. Stop looking because you’ve found it: Sirena In The City. We recently had the pleasure of staying in Merida at Sirena In The City. From the start, we knew this was going to be fantastic. It was so clean when we got there, we thought we must have been the first people to stay there. Not true but it sure felt like it. Before we ever got there, we had an email with clear directions, lots of info about how stuff worked and links to help with any of the technical stuff. Sirena In The City has both a studio apartment and a loft apartment. The studio is on the first floor and has a wonderful backyard pool. The loft is two floors with the rooftop serving as the small pool area. This was where I spent most of my time.Very comfortable, day or night. When we got there, there was even food (and a couple of beers) in the fridge and cupboard so we could immediately relax and enjoy the late afternoon sun on the rooftop patio. There was even two chilled shot glasses in the freezer. The kitchen is well-appointed and we did make a few breakfasts but mostly we ate out as there are so many nice places to eat close by. There are also plenty of electrical sockets throughout the apartment. This is certainly different from many places I’ve stayed in Mexico. There are room safes, clearly marked light and ceiling fan switches, nice wooden hangers in the closets (and plenty of closet space), towels, soap, robes, everything you’ll need to feel right at home. Wireless internet connection is provided with separate log-ins for the studio and loft apartments. Sirena In The City is conveniently located near Centro so you can either walk or ride one of the provided bicycles to where it’s all happening. Riding a bike in Merida is pretty safe . Ride in the same direction as traffic, stay to the right and don’t get too close to the curb and you’ll be just fine. The bikes are quite nice with baskets and cable locks on each one. Merida has no shortage of places to eat. Be sure to check online for hours as some open later or close earlier depending on their focus. For breakfast, we liked Wayan’s. Calle 59 & Ave 1 (Calle 45). The other place we highly recommend is Chicharroneria La Lupita, Calla 64 & 93. Another great find was the little taco place in the market just down the street from Sirena In The City at Calle 57 & 72. You’ll be looking for the place that serves seafood tacos - get the shrimp ceviche or (and) the fried shrimp tacos. We ate as several others including Manjar Blanco and La Chaya Maya, both good restaurants. If you like to go out dancing, La Negrita (Calle 62 & 49) may have a live band that’ll get you going. If you want to see some fine art, we’d recommend the studio of local artists, Abel and Melva Medina. Drawings, sculpture and paintings make this almost like going to a fine arts museum. Merida is close to other places worthy of exploration including Izamal, Progresso and Celestun. Keep in mind when you do go exploring that many museums and artisan workshops are closed on Monday. One of the most artful, peaceful things I found in Merida was at Sirena In The City. At about 6 AM, the doves start singing and the church bells ring. From the rooftop or your patio, it’s an early symphony that will start your day off right.

We had a wonderful 3 week stay in November at Sirena in the City. The location could not be more perfect - and owner Steven Broin pays attention to the smallest details to ensure his guests have a comfortable & memorable experience. In addition to all the comforts of home including a full kitchen & laundry facilities, guests will appreciate the tasteful decor - it's obviously the home of a true artisan. We enjoy the loft apartment - the plunge pool upstairs is a wonderful place to relax - or morning coffee on the deck overlooking the downstairs pool is another great option. I personally enjoy the exercise of going up & down stairs - for those that prefer remaining on one level the downstairs apartment has the same ammenities with an enclosed back yard and pool. Every morning I enjoyed walking to the Santiago park and market for hot tortillas & fresh squeezed juice - across the street from the market is a grocery with any other staples you might need. On mornings you prefer to go out for coffee, Cafe Montejo is around the corner - they also have delicious salads & pizza for a delightful evening snack. We found uber a very inexpensive & easy way to get around the city - bicycles are provided if you prefer. The main square is only a 10 to 15 minute stroll away. Merida is an amazing city - safe clean & welcoming with so many things to see and do. We enjoyed a home tour and the symphony on our last visit. We are returning in March for another extended stay - I'm looking forward to new adventures & revisiting our home away from home. Steven you're an amazing host - thank you for your gracious...

My wife and I had a wonderful 5 night stay in the loft apartment at Sirena in the City in Merida. On all counts, it was perfect and the location -- in the Santiago neighborhood -- is great. We were comfortable walking most everywhere though found Uber easy (and inexpensive) so used that a bit too.

On our late afternoon arrival (after a four hour ADO bus ride), we found basic staples already in the fridge: eggs, break, milk, juice, butter and wine! After 10 days of restaurants prior to that, it was wonderful to kick back and have a simple eggs and toast and wine dinner! Such a nice touch and really appreciated.

Steve, the host, provided much useful information (where to rent a car, bus info) and was easy to reach for pre-trip and on trip questions. Jose (we never met him) was available for cleaning but we were Ok on our own. His family creates beautiful woven items and we purchased a few that were available in the apartment.

The apartment designed by Steve is light and airy and just so well planned. Comfy bed, big dual closets, Nespresso coffee machine, perfect kitchen, lovely bathroom and -- a surprise to us -- an upstairs terrace with lounge chairs and a full bathroom, beautifully tiled as is the entire apartment. Sirena in the City will surely be our Merida place on any future trip.

By the way, if you've never been to the area (it was our first time in the Yucatan state), it's wonderful area to explore -- both the city -- and about. Cenotes, Progreso (beach town), Mayan sites small and big, so many small towns with road side restaurants, the Ruta Puuc and Merida...
