Maiz, Canela y Cilantro is a local, family-owned small restaurant in Merida, with vegetarian and vegan options.
I visited here for lunch during my stay in Merida and was presented with a breakfast menu. It featured lots of egg options and some veggie options. Perhaps because I arrived at 11:30 am, breakfast was still being served, but I had read about the set lunch of the day in which they had a vegetarian and regular version. This lunch option was not presented to me, which was unfortunate, as I had really wanted to try it and had heard good things. I’m not sure what time their lunch menu starts being served at, but if would be nice if this information was available.
Anyways, I ended up ordering the roasted vegetables and the juice of the day which was Chaya. The roasted vegetables were pretty good though lacking in some flavour. They came with fresh tortillas and refried beans which were delicious! The salsa that the meal came with, was SOO spicy. I was not warned ahead of time by the staff, though I probably should have sampled it first before putting an entire spoonful on my tortilla. My mouth was on fire for the rest of my meal.
The staff were friendly and gracious. There was an open style kitchen situated at the back of the restaurant where you could see the food being prepared fresh by the local women. The decor was nice and there were lots of wooden tables and various local art on the walls. The restaurant had a peaceful, cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I would return again but would try to catch the set lunch of the day! I also wish there had been more veggie options that didn’t...

Walk-in and you don't know if you should wait to be seated or seat yourself. FWIW it's seat yourself. There is no menu after breakfast. I was here for lunch. Insanity that there is no menu in Spanish or English. I had no idea what my options were due to language issue AND FACE MASK. When my plate arrived it was adequate portion. Food was good and fresh, normal for Mexico I think. When I was finished she took my plate and vanished without asking if I wanted desert or my check. I did want desert, but after waiting 20 minutes I gave up and flagged someone else for my check. If i had waited any longer I could have ordered dinner while I was there. Price was 140 pesos. Too much if you ask me. People in mexico dont have that kind of money. Clearly they are targeting gringos with money. Go to a taco stand for half price and better service. There is a router at exit but it was never offered or posted. Whats the point of having wifi if its a secret? More skimpy table napkins also. Bring your own is my advice. I hate napkins that weigh as much as a postage stamp.

Read moreThis is a small place that focuses on vegetarian/vegan food. It is a staffed by caring people who work hard to serve good, fresh food at a very reasonable price.
The service was slow but that was my fault. I went hungry and I went at the peak of lunch. Like I said, it's not fast food. Attention is given to every dish and order and when they are busy, do not expect things to be fast. So please know that the slow service was not a ding against them.
The 3 stars is a reflection of several features; cleanliness (it wasn't dirty but it could have been attended to a little more) quality of food (it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was average food for a very inexpensive price) and comfort (we sat indoors - only table available) and when it's hot, the little fan on the floor just doesn't cut it.
Would I go back? The jury is still out on that. Maybe. If I find myself passing by and it is earlier than the last time, and were I in the mood for a veggie option lunch, yeah, maybe. Or not. Probably not. Too many...
