I tend to overlook stuff on holiday and give the benefit of the doubt to those in the hospitality industry who have had a tough few years.||||Unfortunately, Maison Brummell Majorelle (MBM) is way too satisfied with itself for us to overlook things at the prices they are charging. This is especially so when everywhere else we stayed (eight venues) around Morocco did deliver wonderful service and some of these were half the price of MBM.||||As they say "beauty does not boil the pot" and in this case, MBM's stunning design failed to deliver on the basic operational issues one expects from hotel accommodation. MBM could be a brilliant venue but, in my opinion, it needs a radical management overhaul and an increase in staff numbers.||||In fairness the skeleton staff tried their best, but the place seems to be operating on a shoestring where a laid back relaxed vibe e.g. get the drinks yourself is actually an effort to minimize overheads. There was no obvious manager, or adult in the room, The staff, in my opinion, seemed to lack experience and/or support from the owner. ||||Key issues:||||Air-Conditioning:||The air-conditioning in our room could not be controlled. It tended to go off most of the time. Nobody in MBM knew how to adjust the timer settings. Despite requests over three days to get somebody who did, it was never resolved. There was no real effort to address our concerns by the staff on duty.||||Language:||It was the only venue in Morocco where we struggled with communication and we are fluent in French and English.||||Security:||Room keys are left in a dish close to the entrance and generally there is no one on reception. There is no visible night porter. A call to the "emergency" number was not responded to for 30 minutes.||||Safety:||The swimming pool should have depth markers as it gets deep quite quickly. When we had to check out at 3.30 am there were no lights on in the stairway or corridors and we had to negotiate these with our cases in the dark with our cell phones.||||Relaxed Vibe (i.e. DIY):||This means get your own drinks, pool towels, wait for your lunch while the staff have ||theirs.....as we have too few staff.||||LGBT:||When checking in, we were asked at reception if we are a couple. As two men, this is potentially admitting to committing a crime in Morocco, and not one we would be too happy to confirm. Other hotels, when they did ask (subtlety), just wanted to ensure that a double room was what we required/had booked. The receptionist then went on to ask which of us was the husband and which was the wife! When we said we were two married men and declined to answer this question, we were told, we cannot both be husbands. This could be seen as humorous but not in a country where gay men are imprisoned and merely serves to demonstrate, in my opinion, the lack of training/inexperience...
Read moreMaison Brummell is likely the best place to live at in Marrakesh. My wife and I stayed for a total of 5 nights in December 2024. Architecturally, the place is obviously stunning, with spacious rooms that are quiet, comfortable, and tastefully done. You can get a fair idea about the building and rooms from their webstite as it is quite like what you see on there. But, architecture does not make or break a place alone. What makes Maison Brummell stand out is the team that runs it. Rarely have we stayed at a place where we felt after the very first day as if we were staying with our own family and/or friends. I hope I am not mispelling any of the names and that I am also not forgetting anyone, but in no specific order, Siham, Bouchra, Rashid, Youssef, Sanaa, Emad, and Houssan were all so loving and took such great care of us. Telling us places to go check out, eat at, help with reservations, or just having a normal conversation like friends and family do. There are hotels where people working there are 'trained' to become like robots, in the process losing all their agency and grace. Not Maison Brummell. Each one of them is confident and knows exactly what needs to be done to take care of guests. Not to mention the food is one of the finest you can have. The breakfast is delicious and thoughtfully done. Certainly try out Bouchra's tagine and cousous for dinner if you can. It's definitely one of the best we had not just in Marrakech but overall in Morocco. Location-wise, staying inside the medina is great of course, but living at Maison Brummell, which is not too far away from the medina either, gives one a totally different perspective of Marrakesh and its people. It's in the new city but on a quiet inner road. So, once one is back from all the hustle bustle of the medina, one feels at home. You can cozy up with a glass of wine in the lounge downstairs, or go for a hammam appointment. My wife and I hope to return to Marrakesh in the near future as we just loved it. But, it is equally our desire to return there to stay at Maison Brummell again, and get pampered the way we were. I honestly hope the owner(s) of Maison Brummell take just as good a care of their team running as they do of their guests, working tirelessly to make everyone feel genuinely welcomed. Just superb. Highly, highly,...
