ORIGINAL REVIEW: In the middle of our stay now and this place confuses me. The room is situated with a nice overview of the plaza, but it’s very poorly laid out and things appear in disrepair. Gives me the impression there isn’t a lot of care taken to ensure the rooms stay maintained.
The room is also noisy because it’s situated above the plaza- not the biggest deal but didn’t expect it.
The direct area is more a nightlife corridor, so if you were expecting quiet and peace- this is not a place to stay at all- bar below and around were open until 1am, so lots of noise and people. Not at all a quiet weekend we hoped for. That may have been our fault in not researching, so be aware.
Overall, this feels more like an upscale hostel than a proper hotel. If you have an American perspective of a hotel- this is not it. For the price- expected much much more than what this place appears to be.
And the 4-star listing??? Not sure what that refers to. This is by no international hospitality measures a 4-star hotel, so that should be removed (star ratings, not customer ratings has to do with amenities and facilities. A proper 4-star establishment which lists itself as such has: restaurants, pool, gym, sauna, etc. This hotel has none.)
Will update this review by the end of our stay.
REVISED (Post-Stay):
Overall we had a nice stay and the hotel is in the midst of a very vibrant day/night area of Utrecht.
I left the original review because it’s still valid in a lot of ways, however I will say that once the staff knew we had issues with the noise- they went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay. They were incredibly attentive and genuine in wanting us to enjoy ourselves and made an effort to make sure that happened. So if you are having an issue, make sure to be open and communicate about it.
That being said- I still believe it is more akin to a very upscale hostel with nicer rooms and definitely not a “four star hotel” in terms of amenities.
We would definitely stay here again, but would recalibrate our expectations now that we’re more familiar with everything. Overall it’s a nice place that felt a touch overpriced when we stayed. I’m sure if we stayed in off-peak times that we would find it to be a great value. Great location, good enough rooms, and...
Read moreI could not have been happier with our stay at the Mother Goose Hotel in Utrecht. A small, cozy boutique hotel located in the heart of the city. I loved the location - a ten minute walk to Centraal, beautiful canals are just a minute away, six minutes to Dom Tower, seventeen minutes to the museums - you can get anywhere from here on foot or bike. ||The hotel itself is small, but charming. It really gave the feel of having a small place of our own in Utrecht as opposed to staying at a hotel. The lobby is small, but quaint, and our room was simply beautiful. We had a medium-sized room on the Grey Goose Floor, and I couldn't have been happier. ||The bed was super comfortable, and noise was not an issue for us during our stay (on a weekend). The bathroom situation was a little different - the sink and shower stall were in a little alcove in the room, and the toilet was in a VERY small closet-like room. I was worried that the room would be steamy/humid when the shower was in use, but I was pleased to see that it did not occur. The A/C (always pleasant to find in this type of hotel in Europe) and TV worked perfectly. There is no dresser, and the wardrobe was very small, but it worked for our 2-night stay. There's no fridge in the room, but you can use one in the lobby. The elevator is small, but efficient and VERY appreciated. It wouldn't have been fun to lug luggage up those charming Dutch steps! ||I wish I had gotten the name of the staff who worked (August 23 & 24) - because they couldn't have been more professional, helpful, or polite, and really enhanced our stay. The place was spotless, not only would I go back, I plan to. ||Tip: Boons Markt is just down the street and was a great place to pick up snacks and little things we needed. Again, made it feel like we were at home. And Utrecht? How I loved Utrecht! Next time I am in the Netherlands, I plan on making it my home base. The town offered the perfect balance of charm and activity - it was like a calmer, cleaner, more restful Amsterdam, and since Utrecht Centraal is the main hub, you can get almost anywhere from there. I can't wait...
