Astray Motel Rotorua — Hotel in North Island

Not recommending this motel to anybody...not even worth of 1 star but just given it for the location. Hopefully after reading this review, they will make necessary improvements!!! We were 3 families and had booked 3 rooms. Since it was peak season, we were allotted different types of rooms as per the availability. So, it was duty of the receptionist to take us to the right rooms but she reluctantly handed over the keys to us. The room numbers on the keys were also confusing. Unfortunately, one of our family friends got into the wrong room which was vacant at that time with no signs of guests staying in that room. It was few hours later when other guests arrived, our friends realized they were in wrong room. The most weird part was that the room got opened with both keys - one which was given to our friends and another which the other guests had. In fact, any key was opening any rooms. NO SECURITY!!! Moreover, that receptionist probably named "Sim" misbehaved with our friends who were with a baby and instead of apologizing to both guests and settling the issue maturely, she was blaming our friends to have not got to the right room. She literally harassed our friends instead of accepting the facts. BAD...

Got a double bed for the night here for $55. It was the best looking place for that price. I mean what do you expect right? The room had a double bed but that's all that fits in the room. It's actually a little hard to shut the door. The toilet is very little. The showers were tiny, you had to open the door try get yourself into the shower then somehow close the bathroom door then the shower door. It's actually that frustrating just to have a shower. It felt very claustrophobic in every space except for the hallways and the kitchen. When I went to goto my room I saw a few head hairs on the duvet I was on & my skin felt agitated being on it. So I had to sleep on top of my comforter. Aside from all of that it is located in the heart of rotorua close access to a lot of places & the facilities were very clean which is a plus for a communal place. If you are just looking for somewhere to rest your head for the night, use power etc and are on a tight budget it's acceptable because it is so cheap. But I feel more comfortable in my vehicle and regretted paying even 55 there for the night. So each to...

Astray backpackers hotel is a great stay, offering great value. It is located in the center of Rotorua so you would be located close to everything. Everything in the hotel was operational and very clean. An important aspect is that for an affordable price, you get your own room. They also have separate bathrooms and showers so you would not have to share it simultaneously with others, especially the opposite gender. On top of that, you get a fan and a heater in the room, which are unique amenities that you usually do not get at budget stays. The best part is the receptionist. Iya is very kind and is a welcoming snd friendly host. She will help you with anything you need. I needed medication because I had a headache on my way out and she gave me some tablets. She also offered me great recommendations all around town and was good person to chat with. She even gave me a ride to restaurant because it was in her way! She will definitely take care of you during your stay here. I greatly recommend this stay and I would come back again....
