Not a Hotel – Just a Dressed-Up Motel. Avoid if You Want a Real Hotel Experience.
If you're looking for a real hotel experience in Rotorua, Copthorne is not it. This place is basically a very standard, worn-out motel that happens to have a swimming pool and a hot spa – and that’s the only reason it’s even clinging to the “hotel” title.
The property is tired and clearly in desperate need of a full upgrade. The beds were not comfortable, the furnishings are outdated, and the whole place has that run-down vibe like it hasn’t seen investment in years. Whoever is managing this place clearly doesn’t want to spend a single cent on improvements – and it shows.
We reached out a week before check-in asking about a room upgrade. No reply. Just flat-out ignored, which says a lot about how seriously they take customer service. Also, don’t expect any loyalty recognition. We were told that since we booked through Expedia, our Millennium loyalty membership was irrelevant and we wouldn’t get any points. So much for being a loyal customer.
We didn’t even bother with their breakfast after reading multiple bad reviews – honestly, it didn’t seem worth the risk. That said, we did enjoy using the hot pool and spa, which were a welcome break and probably the only real highlight of the stay.
We also want to give credit where it’s due – the staff at check-in were polite, and a special mention to the lovely lady who came to service our room, who was extremely friendly and kind.
But overall? This place is running on fumes, likely because of poor management or someone who’s just too greedy to price rooms reasonably or reinvest into the property. No wonder the place was nearly empty when we checked in. Or probably they have intentionally put us in a very worn out room because we have booked through expedia but that's how we have felt.
Bottom line: If you're after a real hotel experience with comfort, service, and value –...
Read moreWhen a hotel offers 2 room types and charges more for the 'superior room,' then a guest would simply think that they are paying more due to the additional amenities the room has to offer. The superior room's description clearly mentions ' A better way to stay with panoramic views of the city and beyond.' Not that this was the main reason of our visit, however we would've liked to have some sort of view, simply because we paid the higher price. However the view we got was of the car-park, with cars hardly 50 metres away from our room. When I called Reception about the same, I was straight away transferred to the Front Office Manager who was extremely rude and just asked "is that the main reason of your visit?" While we do appreciate that Copthorne does not only focus on leisure guests and has a large corporate clientele, thus providing rooms with views would not be their highest priority, however if that is the case do not mention 'panoramic views of the city on your website.' I'm not usually the one to create fuss however the attitude of the front office manager was absolutely absurd and not acceptable for a chain such as Millennium hotels. I was not even apologised to and she just that if its mentioned on the website its a mistake. Other small things that make a huge difference for guests is simply having 4 coffee mugs in the room, especially when it has the capacity to sleep 4 people. The buffet breakfast was also tasteless and not value for the money we paid for it. Honestly speaking, it just isn't enough to just provide 'at par' service nowadays, and our stay was just below 'at-par' service to...
Read moreHad a pleasant stay for my short trip to Rotorua. Copthorne is a large hotel on the main hotel strip in Rotroua. The buildings are a little on the old side but it is clear that the place has been well looked after and maintained. There was a little bit of a line when we arrived to check in with only one person on the front but the line quickly disappeared when another staff member came to help check in guests. Our room was on the third floor. The day that we checked in was especially hot so it was a very nice touch that the AC was running to keep the room cool for us. The room was very clean and tidy, as was the bathroom. Amenities included the standard toiletries and complimentary milk. We weren't advised of any wifi details (though this wasn't a problem for a short stay), nor were we given carpark instructions. We did overhear that the carpark is first come, first served basis which seemed reasonable. As we were out for a late dinner we did have to park on the street upon our return at night. This wasn't too much of an issue however. Facilities include a swimming pool and a typical hotel gym (don't expect all the equipment that a gym has). Hotel location is nice, however is a little too far to walk to and from town, so a car is recommended if staying here. Overall I enjoyed my stay here. The hotel is a little old, but has been well maintained and has the facilities you would expect. I look forward to staying here again in the future. Note: There is a 2% credit card surcharge if paying at the property, best to pay online...
