We booked this hotel as a special treat after some really difficult medical testing, thinking it was accessible as described. We phoned to check that it was accessible by wheelchair and asked for a shower stall. This was all confirmed over the phone where they happily took the $750ish for the room, and we booked in looking forward to treating ourselves. Imagine our surprise and utter disappointment to discover that yes while there is an accessible room, it is not in the main villa (which has huge stairs at both entrances) and is instead a different building with a narrow entrance that would not fit an electric wheelchair or bigger mobility aids. The main hotel is not accessible at all. The wheelchair accessible entrance is a slanted gate (that they have to open) with a grate that is a trip hazard and difficult to manoeuvre a chair over. The staff were out of their depth and denied that their hotel was not accessible. It was incredibly embarrassing and demeaning experiencing this. Please do not advertise yourself as accessible when really you’re offering an outhouse that has none of the character of the villa and doesn’t met the requirements for accessibility. There is also no off street parking or accessible parking. I had to drive my wheelchair up to the corner of the street and cross there in order to get to the “accessible entrance”. Clearly showing that disabled people are once again, an...
Read moreWe stayed at Hotel Fitzroy the night of our wedding. It was nice but we thought it really wasn't that amazing and actually wish we chose the other hotel we were thinking of going with. The staff are friendly and helpful but the person who helped us didn't seem like they knew what they were doing and seemed a bit awkward. We arrived later at night (after our wedding) and the front gate was locked so we stood outside with all our bags and called to ask if there was someone there to let us in. They came out but didn't know how to open the gate (which is fine, it was just a bit strange as we were just standing there waiting). They couldn't open the gate so asked us to go around to the back gate... Once inside they sat us down and gave us cold tea and a biscuit when we really just wanted to go to our room. Once showed to our room they showed us around the room (pointed out the bathroom and a few other things) which we really didn't think was necessary and again, felt weird. Breakfast was okay, the effort was there but it was a bit cold and the lemon curd took away from it. All in all, this hotel tried to make it personal but it just felt awkward to us. Perhaps we just aren't the kind of people who appreciates that kind of service or maybe our expectations were too high, we just don't feel like what we got was worth...
Read morePros: The decor of the room is very nice, with 3m ceilings and large windows that open. The bathroom is spacious and the underfloor heating is a nice touch.
Cons: There is much not to like.
The hotel is noisy and we could hear people walking in the halls and upstairs at all hours of the night.
The room appears spacious because of the high ceilings, but in fact is quite small. There is only one chair and a tiny table (for two people) wedged into a corner right next to the bathroom door.
The room we had (Campbell Suite) overlooked a side yard where the hotel's bags of laundry were prominently on display, and the other window overlooked the street which was very busy with cars.
There is only street parking available (and not necessarily near the hotel), with no drop-off area, so be prepared to walk if you don't get lucky finding a spot.
Staff presented themselves as pleasant, but seemed put out with basic requests.
Not sure about the security, as someone tried to open the door to our room in the middle of the night. It could have been another guest thinking it was their room, but it also could have been someone from outside the hotel.
We were looking forward to our stay and expected Hotel Fitzroy to deliver a luxury experience, but we were totally...
