Hotelito Del Mar — Hotel in Bocas del Toro

If you want the hostel experience for the price of a hotel, this is the place for you. ||Yes, our room was clean but the good news stops there. ||||Everything felt cheap and low-budget, from cables hanging from the wall to oddly positioned art prints covering up "bad bits". The bathroom was so small you couldn't sit straight on the toilet, the towels were thin and mismatched, and there was no fan. Rooms face onto the street so if you don't want people looking in you have to keep the curtains drawn at all times. ||||And talking of facing onto the street - be prepared for noise. A LOT OF NOISE. A badly positioned wall directly outside the room means that revellers congregating in town sit there to enjoy a beer or late night takeaway. They chat. And laugh. And sing. All night long. There were also building works outside our room from 8am-7pm during our stay. Oh joy.||||When we stumbled to breakfast bleary-eyed, one cup of coffee and one glass of artificial tasting juice was plonked down in front of us. There was a chair on the table we were sat at but I wasn’t allowed to move it. Huh? You also get scrambled eggs and some cheap bread. Our 8 year old doesn't eat eggs so we asked for some jam to go with the bread, but the response was "we only have butter". We also asked for coffee refills, only to be told "we don't usually do this". ||||As an island, it's pretty obvious that people want to go swimming and surfing, yet there is nowhere in the room to hang anything. Not even a hook on the back of the bathroom door. We left with a lot of damp clothes and towels. No beach towels are provided so take your own. Heaven forbid you should make any...

We enjoyed our 7 day stay in this property, everybody at front desk was helpful, the manager Mr. Elias was very professional and nice gentleman, he speaks good English and made sure we have everything we need. Also Miss Georgina, a very kind and cheerful lady always smiling and came to help when we needed something. The Studio is super clean, comes with everything you need to cook, two smart TVs and a nice little balcony. The roof top pool is very clean and very refreshing. There's also two big supermarkets nearby, a laundry room within one block, a Zumba class going on every day in the evening and is free, just ask Georgino, she'll tell you all about it. Lage:||Das Hotelito des Mar liegt in unmittelbarer Näher des Bootsanlegers, allerdings würde ich die Lage eher als städtisch bezeichnen, denn das Meer sieht man nur, wenn man sich im ersten Stockwerk auf dem Balkon auf die Zehenspitzen sellt. Ringsherum wird fleißig gebaut, wodurch auch deutlich Baulärm zu hören ist. (Juli ist wohl Nebensaison, ich kann nicht beurteilen, wie lange die Arbeiten an den umliegenden Gebäuden noch anhalten werden.) In wenigen Minuten ist man mitten im Stadtzentrum und erreicht somit schnell die Bushaltestelle (Bocas del Drago, Starfish Beach), Touranbieter, Restaurants und Geschäfte.||||Zimmer:||Wir wohnten in einem Zimmer in Obergeschoss. Es gab darin zwei Doppelbetten, TV, AC, Bad mit WC und Warmwasserdusche sowie einen großen Wandschrank. Der Balkon war riesig, aber gehörte nicht nur zu unserem Zimmer. Etwas schade fand ich, dass der Balkon sich weniger dazu eignete, einen Nachmittag gemütlich darauf zu verbringen und etwas zu entspannen, da so viel Lärm von Bauarbeiten an anderen Häusern ringsherum war.||||Essen:||Es gab ein kleines Frühstück, welches aus Muffins, Obst, Kaffee/Tee und Saft bestand. Für den doch recht hohen Zimmerpreis wäre ein etwas reichhaltigeres oder abwechslungsreicheres Frühstück wünschenswert gewesen. ||||Personal und Service:||Die Rezeption war zwischen 7:30 am und 9 pm besetzt. Man konnte uns dort Informationen zum Transport auf der Insel und zwischen den Inseln sowie nach Costa Rica geben. Außerdem bestand die Möglichkeit, für 5 US-Dollar pro Beutel Wäsche waschen zu lassen. Das hat gut und vor allem schnell funktioniert.||||Fazit: Grundsätzlich würde ich beim nächsten Aufenthalt in Bocas del Toro wieder Isla Colon als Ausgangsort wählen, denn von hier aus hat man alle Möglichkeiten für Touren zu den umliegenden Inseln und ein gutes gastronomisches und Unterhaltungsangebot. Im Vergleich zu anderen Unterkünften ist das Hotelito eher als teurer (50-70 US-Dollar) zu bezeichnen, doch im Zimmer fühlt man sich auch wohl und sicher. Als Unterkunft für einen entspannten Karibikurlaub wie aus dem Bilderbuch (Strand, Palmen, blaues Meer) ist das Hotelito del Mar ungeeignet, denn es mangelt hier an allem, was man mit Karibikurlaub klischeehaft zusammenbringt. Aber das weiß man ja, wenn man dieses Hotel wählt. Um Strand und Meer zu haben, muss man eher auf eine andere Insel (Red Frog Beach) oder tief in die Tasche langen, um ein Hotel mit Balkon zur Meeresseite...
