Hotel Margarita — Hotel in Puno

I returned to Puno after 15 years, and stayed again at my favorite hotel in Puno. The owners are so friendly and helpful, and the hotel is very clean and secure. Since I was there lastm they have made various improvements such as free wifi. The beds are very comfortable with two soft pillows on each bed (something we only encountered at our hotel in Cusco which cost 4 tines as much) as well as down comforters. The sheets were new and very clean. We had plenty of hot water. The hotel is very well located only 2 blocks from Parque Pino and Calle Lima. The street in front has been paved in the last few years, but the traffic is not heavy, so the street noise was minimal. Very quiet location, especially considering the proximity to Calle Lima. I ended up staying here by accident as the hostal I had booked was completely closed. Not great when you are travelling alone and don't know where the hell you are!|The owner and his wife were incredibly welcoming, they spoke no English but we managed with my pigeon Spanish and lots of smiles. They booked both a trip to the lake and my onwards bus trip to copacabana really efficiently. They even leant me 30soles in change for the day as I only had a 50 and needed small change for the islands. |The wifi was great, enough to Skype home easily, and the hot showers and duvet was welcoming after a long day. This "quaint" hotel desperately needs some fresh air. It is so musty I almost didn't want to breathe the air in the lobby and the stairway. It was also freezing and there was no sign of heating anywhere, either in the lobby of the room. We were too cold to leave the bed for most of the time we were there. The bed with its crips new linen and warm doona was the only redeeming feature, except for the wifi. The wifi was excellent. The bathroom was not inviting at all and we couldn't bear to take a shower. It was too cold to do anything. The owner? and the other receptionist were very nice but I wouldn't go back.
