I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Grand House Relais & Châteaux, and it was an experience that exceeded all my expectations. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous, blending classic elegance with modern comfort in a way that made my stay both luxurious and cozy. The service was nothing short of superb. From the moment I arrived, I was treated with the utmost care and attention. A special thanks to Soraya, Michelle, and Guri, whose dedication and friendliness made my stay truly memorable. Their personalized touches and genuine warmth made me feel right at home. The restaurant at the Grand House is a culinary delight. Every meal was a testament to the chef's talent, with dishes that were not only delicious but also beautifully presented. Dining here was an absolute pleasure, and I found myself looking forward to each meal. Overall, my experience at the Grand House Relais & Châteaux was phenomenal. I can't recommend it highly enough and look forward to returning in the future.

We spent a few days here in July and felt extraordinarily well. In spite of Corona we relaxed very much here. Villa Real de San Antonio and the eastern Algarve are not very crowded with tourists, there are almost no skyscrapers and still many authentic places and landscapes. The hotel is located directly at the promenade opposite the idyllic harbour. For an elegant breakfast you should definitely choose the seats at the floor-to-ceiling windows with a view of the promenade and the harbour - a day couldn't begin more beautiful! The hotel has been grandiosely renovated and offers an attentive and loving service at a high level. The rooms are beautifully and comfortably furnished. The hotel has a beach club with a fine restaurant, pool and deckchairs on the waterfront. We can recommend this hotel to anyone looking for individual luxury beyond mass tourism.

For our one night stay in charming VRSA, we decided to try the Grand House. Arrival was confusing as no designated parking space for check-in or overnight guests. You are relegated to fighting with all other visitors to VRSA for the limited street parking available. Once we cleared that hurdle and were settled in to our room the stay was very enjoyable. Rooms are historic but well maintained and outfitted, Special extras and amenities were well thought out and appreciated. The small bar can get crowded at times but the creative genius behind the counter ensures that you are welcomed. Breakfast was very nice, order off the menu as opposed to the usual buffet was an appreciated plus. The dining room is beautiful, inviting and pleasant with nice views across to the Marina and River. Overall our short stay was very enjoyable, we will return

We had high expectations for this hotel, given the price and 5-star status, and they unfortunately were not met.

The hotel room was nice - no qualms there. Breakfast and dinner also quite tasty. The staff was nice too.

The reason for three stars is the overall operations of the hotel, which all stem from staffing issues.

— the beach club closes at 5pm (kitchen at 4) and is not open on Mondays. It’s also a 30 min walk to the beach club, and you pass a homeless camp with a huge intimidating dog barking at you on the way. They used to have a jeep that would drive you, but they had a malfunctioning part and it’s been out of service for a year (why not buy a diff one?). Definitely drive if you go, I wish the staff had told us this.

— the bar (which looks lovely and is original from 1920s) is only open from 7pm to 11pm.

— the restaurant (very tasty and pretty) had only one waiter for 6 tables, and that person also had to be bartender - tough job - it meant that 90 mins into dinner we still did not have our mains, so we took them to the room instead.

— the grand cafe is closed since March, not enough staff.

Other notes is that there isn’t really a shared public space large enough to comfortably hang out.

I was between 3-4 star rating, but the price point to experience ratio was too low for me to recommend 4 stars.

We ended up leaving a day early, and were not able get refunded for the last day (understandable given short lead time and the fact they are a small hotel). The manager was accommodating and offered us a voucher to come back within the year, but I wouldn’t come back until the cafe is open and the beach club is open til midnight (as used to be the case).

The location of the hotel was scenic, right on the water, with a view of the boats and yachts, but the surrounding areas are pretty run down with not a lot to do. Other areas of the Algarve have more to offer I think.

The manager explained that the staffing issues arise from the fact there are not enough locals in the city to work there, and that they sometimes need to find housing for the workers that come from other areas, which is too expensive to scale.

These problems are not specific to the Grand House, it’s the whole hospitality industry that is still recovering from the pandemic, so we all need to keep that in mind as we book these types of hotels in the next years.

I understand the excuses, but for a 5 star resort on our honeymoon trip, im frankly not looking to hear any excuses given the...

Not so Grand. Nice room, but horrible reception staff and a terrible stay for a special occasion. I reserved the suite for a two night stay spending $1668 for my wife’s 50th birthday. We were on a two week trip to Lisbon and the Algarve and this was our fourth five star hotel and by far the most expensive at more than double the others. We received an email several days prior asking for a number of things —passport numbers, COVID guidelines, etc. I responded with all the details adding this was a special occasion and that my wife wanted to go on the salt tour and tasting on her birthday. I asked them for other ideas and suggestions to make the trip memorable. I received confirmation of the passport information and dinner at the hotel. When we checked in, I again asked for details on the salt tour indicating this was our to top choice for her birthday and was told, she would look into it. We stopped by later and were told she had sent a text to the owner about the tour and another couple was interested as well, so she should have confirmation shortly. We asked for dinner recommendations and she only had one and that place had a padlock on the door and was closed.. The next morning, my wife’s birthday, we stopped by reception and asked again about the salt tour. It was a different employee and she didn’t know anything about our request. By the way, the hotel promotes this on their website. We asked about other options for the day and she recommended we bike. We thought we might go that direction, but she then said they didn’t have any bikes available. She said she would look into the salt tour and call us. She called at 12:40 saying the tour was full. The hotel seems hyper focused on their beautiful interior, but they have forgotten about the customer they are asking to pay a premium to stay there. They did absolutely nothing to ensure we had a good stay and they didn’t even ask how our stay was when we checked out and they asked for payment. Every other hotel went out of their way to make our stay special on our trip….champagne, recommending and making dinner reservations, scheduling excursions, and booking tours. Such a disappointment and a complete...

“AIN´T...
