Once you eventually find this place, it's actually quite well-situated about halfway between the main Gara de Nord railway station and the old town. Nice, quiet residential area, very close to to two tram stops Vasile Parvan and Cismigiu (#24 from Nord station - if you miss getting off at Vasile Parvan stay on the tram and get off at the next stop, Cismigiu, a couple of minutes away). Another way of getting to the hostel from Gara Nord is by bus 84 ifrom mmediately outside the main station entrance/exit but tram is probably less complicated for people wanting to find the hotel for the first time.||||Assuming you get off the tram at Vasile Parvan, not even your iPhone GPS will find this hotel for you. There are no signs. Nothing. It is right on the junction of Strada Gheorghe Lazar and Strada Ioan Slavici just the opposite side of the road to the school where there are wide garage-like doors which open into the courtyard of Old Centrum. Do NOT go wandering off up Strada Ioan Slavici as I did!||||Once you've found the place, it's fine. It's almost like staying in someone's apartment and doesn't really feel like a hotel at all. The owner and his family seem to occupy downstairs while the guests go up a flight of stairs to their rooms. Nice long breakfast bar with a pc, going open-plan into a kitchen with all amenities, fridge, sink, kettle, oven etc. Two bathrooms for 3 or 4 bedrooms, I forget now. Rooms are fine and bright, one of them being a larger dorm-like affair. Mine was nice and airy, tv and super fast WiFi. The owner was really friendly and let everyone get on with their thing. Only problem I had was that the light in my room didn't work for the last two nights I stayed but the owner nowhere to be seen! This wasn't really problem as it was light enough until I was ready to go to bed at around 2300 but I can imagine it might have been a problem for some.||||Otherwise, the owner was bit of a star. Real character who tried to give me and another Israeli guest some Zen-like detail about water. Very entertaining and friendly.||||Really enjoyed my stay here and would certainly recommend it to budget travellers planning a visit but Bucharest is such a large place with so much to see and do I would probably be tempted to stay in another part of the city next time I visited just to be closer to...
Read moreFirstly you have to remember this is budget accommodation (although Bucharest hotels don't seem cheap) when reading other reviews. We paid about £20 per night which isn't bad, but the uploaded photos by others are applicable and during our trip one shower was out of use, one toilet wasn't bolted down (believe me I was almost in the 'you know what') and there was only one tiny wash basin. Hand towels were supplied but no bath towels or toiletries, however there was plenty of luxury toilet paper (and it really was!). |The owners are lovely (you have to remember English is their second language) and the place is pleasantly located just next to the lovely main park. There is a little outdoor balcony part, kitchen with cooker and fridge to use, however only basic utensils so I'm not sure if you'd want to cook anything big. There is also plenty of on street parking. All in all the Old Centrum is definitely not 3 stars and I'd say more a hostel than hotel and in need of some basic DIY but it was clean throughout, apart from the shower staining which could probably do with a bleaching. Hope this helps anyone else...
Read morePlace is good for the price. It is a house where the owners live on first floor and the second floor is rented out. It has total of 5 simple , but clean rooms. The rooms do not have individual AC. There are two small shared bathrooms in the hallway and one of them has a shower. There is a shared fridge and a kitchen, but you are not allowed to cook in the Kitchen (I think to prevent smell of cooking in the living spaces) Steep stairway to the second floor. NOT handicapped accessible.
Yet fairly close to the downtown with free street parking if you...
