Hostel Old Town — Hotel in Bratislava

Stay was disappointing, especially the service from the hostels remote “reception”.

Firstly, the place reeked very strongly of chemicals from cleaning and it was not a pleasant smell.

Secondly, the room we were in had air conditioning but it was not working. When I messaged the hostel via booking.com (since they don’t have a reception), I was told to ask the next door neighbours to turn the switch on and that they can’t help me. The neighbours were not in the room and regardless it is absolutely not the job of guests to intrude on other guests. When I asked the hostel to message or email the guest next door themselves, the hostel ignored my message. So we ended up sleeping in a room with no exterior windows, fan or air conditioning.

On top of that, it seemed to be too much work for the hostel to provide floor mats in the bathroom - I wonder if the hostel management themselves are happy to walk around their bathrooms with wet feet after a shower? The shower also did not drain well and we were wading in an inch of water after every shower.

In addition, there is no possibility of storing your bags before check in or after check out, because there is no physical reception and there are other guests hanging out in the hostel.

Lastly, the hotel is a fire risk as the rooms have no external windows and no fire alarms.

The only saving grace was that the hostel was quite clean. Thank goodness we were only there...

I initially booked this hostel with the intention of leaving my luggage there while I explored the city. However, after completing my booking and payment, I was informed that there is no reception at this place. Essentially, it operates like an Airbnb without any staff presence. The location is decent, but considering the price, you can find much better options in more central areas with closer proximity to restaurants and bars. The only notable nearby attraction is the castle.

What’s particularly unsettling about this place is the complete absence of windows throughout the building. They use air fresheners everywhere to mask any unpleasant odors, but the lack of natural light and ventilation is quite strange and depressing. It’s worth noting that the cleanliness in the room was subpar, with a dirty floor and bed linens covered in hair.

Even though the weather outside was a mild 15 degrees Celsius, the room was excessively hot due to the absence of windows, which meant that the air didn’t circulate properly. The staff’s attitude was also disappointing – they showed no willingness to assist with any requests or concerns. Furthermore, the soundproofing in the place is terrible; you can hear everything happening in your room.

In summary, my experience at this hostel was far from satisfactory, and I would recommend looking for alternative accommodations...
