I was never treated with so much disrespect and disregard for human dignity. It brought back a racial identity that I never knew I possessed. For the first time I had a true sense of what my parents had to suffer during apartheid.
Firstly, I was shouted at by the manageress for putting my feet on the white bed linen. I have white percale linen on my bed also and the question that baffles me is that, 'why will I do what I would not do at my place?'. Is it because of my skin colour that this lady had the audacity to SHOUT at a guest? When I asked whether I was still welcome to wait in the lounge until our transport came I was told that, 'You will have to ask the owner'. My response was, 'oh so you are not even the owner?' because I considered that she was the owner given her entitlement to speak to me the way that she did. She then responded, 'You do not want to mess with the owner'. I asked her to get the owner and he also came with a preconceived notion of what happened. He told me in no uncertain terms that I am messing with his business, in which way I did not know but nonetheless I asked him not to shout; told him that because it was HIS business he should enquire what the issue was first and that it takes one bad experience like mine to question their attitudes towards redress, democracy and equality. I must say that he attempted to 'remedy' the situation but it did not entirely erase my shock and horror at the way I was treated.
I do intend to let the university know about my experience; so that other faculties and departments can know and hopefully find ways for this establishment not to be on our university vendor list. This might spare other colleagues of similar colour the humiliation that I had to suffer. I will also lodge complaints on Hellopeter and whichever other social media avenues where I can broadcast the humiliation...

We look forward to staying there again for our first anniversary.
Kind regards the...
