The hotel is not bad at all. Very upmarket seeming from when you arrive, and most of the rooms I am sure are beautiful and 5 star, however there are some very important things the experienc lacked for us in particular.
Firstly, when I called and booked and requested the penthouse suite I was unaware that it was 90% an open air outside room with a tiny bedroom and bathroom indoors, we booked and stayed on the coldest day in jhb in years. This meant that 90% of the room was unusable due to the snowy and freezing weather. Paying full price (over R8k) for the room was a little upsetting.
The second thing that went wrong was the plug in the only indoor bath was not working and the bath drained out just as soon as it was run, of course trying to fill it a second time would empty our geyser and cause there to be no hot water for the rest of our night and next morning. It is extremely frustrating paying so much for a 5 star hotel and having to have a cold shower.
The tripe we ordered from room service was clearly not cleaned and was what you might say dirty tripe. Not expected when dining from a top end hotel and paying so much for a dish.
The drinks on the menu are ridiculously over priced at R220 for a shot of liquor and R300 for a single cocktail and R140 for a Dom Pedro. They are massively over priced.
The food we ordered from room service took more than 4 hours to finally arrive.
Finally if not bad enough the bath in the open air bathroom has clearly not been cleaned in months, spider webs all over the place and even used femal sanitary pads laying next to the bath with a used condom discarded not far from that.
I voiced my complaints and asked for someone to come and assist us and we were told that maybe the next morning we could be let into another room to briefly clean up before leaving, which was not offered after all.
The charge when we left ended up being R11600 for 1 night in a tiny bedroom with no hot water hugely expensive drinks, disgusting food, and to top it all off we shared it all with a discarded condom and tampon.
Why offer a room for full frice during winter simply give a heads up and a discount for the night if the room is literally almost entirely outside?
Overall a nice place but a wasted night and wasted money, lesson learned and we move on. Just be careful when...
Read moreWe really loved this place and was very glad to come across it via Google. (Searching for family friendly boutique hotel). If I could give more stars I would.
We only spent one night on the way home from Zambia/Botswana, but will return and it would be a lovely destination. Especially if you combine with their other property for a game drive (it looked amazing)
There grounds are amazing, well kept and cozy. The interior and finishings reminds you of historical homes. The room was very comfortable, bathroom was amazing, and plenty of power where it's needed to charge devices. The lounges and sitting areas were comfortable and inviting. The bar was ready when you were for a cocktail or expresso. Fires in the fireplace when cold was a nice treat. The way everything is situated provides a great opportunity to find a private spot even in the public places. Our room had a hot tub, seating, and an outdoor shower on the patio. ... And it felt very private.
The food was amazing (and with the USD exchange rate is was more reasonably priced than it should be). Everything we had for dinner was great. They even had a kids menu for our 10 year old.
We did not anticipate using the spa, but they had a spot for my wife and it was top notch. She started on the rooftop and the views were amazing. They also had a workout room, 3 pools, and a tennis court.
The best part of the whole experience was the people. The service exceeded any Ritz or 4 seasons we have been to. From airport pickup, casual check in from the lounge, luggage handling, etc. We opted for one of the larger rooms because our kids where with us and were surprised to see not enough needs ... Well, till we went to dinner and the staff transformed the front room to have two beds (fantastic).
We had time to kill before an 8pm flight but didn't want to lug our bags, or be part of a big tour. The staff arranged a day room for our things and to refresh before our 16 hour flight. They also arranged a personal tour catered to us to see Soweto and some of the historical highlights (Mandela's home, etc).
I travel a lot for work and pleasure. Our experience at the residence was the best we...
