One of the reasons I visit Guest Houses is because its a personalised experience and very much like home from home. I am a solo business woman and enjoy feeling safe and secure and most of my work is online. So I also want to be able to work from the environment that I find myself in, without being in the way of others who are checking in or checking out. Ekhaya is one such place and I must say the rooms were spotless and neatly laid out, the breakfast was served when I was ready and I loved the big screen in the living room which was just like being at the movies. Richard, our host, was attentive without being in the way, and his ability to make me feel at home, was just what I needed when I left home. I loved that he saw the monkeys as animals whose home was his home and although they were kept at bay, he didn't treat them as intruders. When you are next in Ballito, pop in and stay with Richard. You will definitely enjoy the experience. You can watch is interview on Youtube as he tells his story from England to South Africa and what an interesting story it is. SA Commuter Online. Or listen to his story on Life is a Beach on...
Read moreWhat a wonderfully, amazing cozy and friendly place. Just four rooms, I stayed in the en suite bedroom with a lovely large bed. Owner Richard Finch is a delightful, well traveled thespian with lots of great stories and a superb hand in the kitchen. This is also his home and so the guesthouse has a lovely country home and homely feel. His friend Lunga is also cheerful and loads of fun with a great sense of humour. This was my first time to Durban and for business. Although Ekhaya is about 30-40 minutes drive from Durban it was well worth it. The guesthouse doubles as a seminar centre and has two spaces that are used for meetings, film screenings, jazz performances, poetry and book readings. There is an outdoor pool, but it was too cold for me to even venture there. The guesthouse is located in a very beautiful seaside town called Ballito and the drive to Durban took me through rolling open expanses of land and along the scenic Indian Ocean coastline. I'd certainly want to return with my daughter - this time...
Read moreDo not book for a holiday, or if you intend on staying for more than a night. The rooms are falsely advertised. one room requires you to share a bathroom woth the host, even though all rooms are advertised as en suite. Another room has an exceptionally smaller bathroom than advertised. The lapa is used for external functions, making it unusable for the most of our stay. Very noisy functions- we never felt comfortable staying in the house. There was no privacy. The host lives in a room next to all of the guest rooms except for the family room, which is located upstairs. There is no fridge space as there is only one in the kitchen being used by the host. We never made use of the lounge/TV room since the host was always there. The only good thing about our stay was the breakfast- one of the rooms are nice, the rest don't come close to the pictures provided. You can find much better options...
