The Green Elephant Backpackers is a safe place and lots of people there, locals and backpackers whom I could nicely socialize with. I slept in a men's 6-bed dorm with a view at the Lions Head. The hostel features a spacious kitchen with 4 fridges, and also a kind of a living space that offers free Wi-Fi and sufficient charging sockets for some 4 to 6 digital nomads at a huge table. There's also a fancy bar (bringing own alc beverages is unfortunately not allowed). To go to the center CBD and to the Water Front of Cape Town is a 5 to 6 km distance, which I always traveled using the local minibus taxi at 12 R each ride and walking the remaining mile.

Bed bugs 😫 I was booked to stay here as part of a tour.so it was booked for me. I arrived 7:30am to find people gettting drunk and passed out in the outside areas. Fine no problem so after a long flight I thought I’d have a few beers also. I went to then get some sleep in the room, pulled the sheet back to find this ☠️ bed bug stains all over the white mattress sheet. I refused to stay and left straight away. No thank you! The comments I’ve heard from single female travellers who find this place quite intimidating I understand why. It’s basically a doss house 🥴

Great place to be at. -If you are looking for place around Cape Town observatory but you are on low-budget, Greenelephant backpackers is the place I recommend. -The staff is very friendly and accommodative. -There is a mini bar for guests and a braai area. -The kitchen is self-catering , you meet a lot of people from different cultures. -Swimming pool? Love it

The Green Elephant is a HOME away from HOME. When i first came there i just needed a place to stay for a short time, but what i experienced within the next few days of my stay, i soon realize i wanted to extend my visit. I did not know any one at my arrival but i made friends very easily. The Staff are amazing and very professional. What ever your need, they will assist you in any way to ensure that you have a great time staying there.

its like one big family. They have ALL you can EAT PIZZA nites every Thursdays, braai nites on Fridays and a African nite where every one can join in and learn The South African way of dancing. .The Green elephant is situated in a very safe environment. They have securities in the areas and safe transportation from and to the back packer at any time 24h.

I can honestly say this is the best place to stay. I am a proudly South African and this place is not only for International students, tourist but its a home to its local visitors also. they have the most amazing balcony with fireplace. I remember late nites on the balcony with friends i made there, sharing some wine, bought from their bar down stairs and just sharing a good evening with great friends.

I have never felt such closeness at any place other then home. The owner ( HOWARD)....i would say he is the BEST!!!!...he really takes time out to give attention to any one who needs it:-)))...he knows every one by name which just shows that you are not just a ordinary visitor to his backpacker, but also the most important one.

GREEN ELEPHANT IS THE PLACE TO BE!!!!!. IF YOU WANT A SOUTH AFRICAN EXPERIENCE THEN THIS IS THE BEST PLACE...

Update - 2019-04-15 - there was yet another brazen robbery yesterday at the backpackers, where a lady had a large amount of money stolen. This is what happens when you have an owner who is turning a blind eye to the goings on, and a management who seem more competent at humiliating guests than dealing with crime. This backpacker and the associated houses run by the Green Elephant are places riddled with crime, my advice is that there are other safer options nearby. If you get robbed here the management will buy your silence by compensating you for your loss. The owner has absolved himself of all responsibility by stating that he is not involved in the day to day management. Guests are not informed of the various incidents, they are also thus not given any advice as to how not to become future victims. The owner has been desperate to sell the business and property for ages now without success and together with the management is obviously keen to keep these sorts of break-ins and thefts as quiet as possible. As an ex Policeman, when I raised concerns about this and requested a meeting of the guests to warn them of the incidents and how to be more vigilant, I was instead evicted and escorted off the property by security to make sure that noone further found out. The backpacker also has a bar and non-guests frequent it at night, making it a further security risk. This is also the only place that I have stayed at where the staff make much more noise than the actual guests. All in all, I could not in good conscience recommend this place to anyone, other than in an...
