Hotel Gótico Barcelona is a big disappointment and certainly does not meet the standards for a 4-star hotel. Here are some observations:
The view from room 110 is into a shaft with some A/C units and toilet pipes. So you can hear a lot of flushing, you get almost no daylight, and the air is somehow smelly. The safe in the room was not working. When we tried to lock it, it said 'bad PIN'. The bathroom missed the floor towel (they added it after the 2nd housekeeping). And the shower gel provided is making the skin very dry, I personally have slightly more sensitive skin so I had to buy my own. In a 4* you expect higher quality cosmetics. The room is not very spacious - for example, there is a luggage stand provided, but if you put your suitcase on it, you can only have it in the space where it partially blocks the door to the bathroom (other possible places would block the closet or the 'balcony' door). The breakfast was ok, but every day was the same. If you spend 7 nights in the hotel with not even a slight change in the buffet offering, it turns into suffering. And the first day we saw a cockroach in the breakfast room, which raises some questions about hygiene standards.
The "bed" story
After arriving in our room, we saw two separate (twin) beds and went to reception to ask for one large bed (double). The reception clerk told us today there are no other available rooms, but he will make a note, and we should get back the next day to ask for a room change. The next day (as instructed), we asked the receptionist if it would be possible to resolve our request. He told us to pack our belongings, and after 2 PM we should have them moved into another room and we'll be given access to it. At the mentioned time we came back to the hotel and asked the receptionist where should we go. He said there is no room change but they changed the bed in the room. It was surprising to hear the hotel would change the furniture, but we went to the room expecting some change. There was no change, and the room looked the same (only it was cleaned as part of standard daily housekeeping). So we returned to the reception asking what happened, and the clerk informed us that they can not change the bed or something like that. Here I must mention that the level of English language of receptionists was very bad and we just lost the willpower to ask more questions and accepted two separate beds. We went back to the room. After several minutes somebody knocked on the door. It was a cleaning lady asking something in Spanish about beds. I speak no Spanish, she spoke no English, so she called reception on the phone and they told me they will now change the beds. Of course, I agreed. Lady then went away. Another couple of minutes later the reception called again, that they will NOW change the beds. I have no idea why they still called as we were waiting for the action to happen. Then, the lady from housekeeping came and changed the bed sheets from 2 smaller to 1 large, which made the two beds (more or less) stick together. During her activity the receptionist called again, that we should not be in the room whilst she is changing the bed sheets, which we didn't understand why - there was enough space without us stepping out of the room and also she was almost done when the...
Read moreI went on my very first solo trip and chose Hotel Gótico, right in the city center, in the Gothic Quarter.
The staff: Everyone was extremely kind, from the reception to the housekeeping team, and even the people serving breakfast. They were wonderfully welcoming and I immediately felt comfortable. Whenever I needed help finding my way or choosing a place to eat, they were always attentive. They even took the time to teach me a few words in Spanish. Honestly, they played a huge role in the success of my stay, because for me, when traveling, the hotel accounts for about 40% of the overall experience. I don’t have the staff members’ names, but thank you all so much! I will definitely come back.
Location and accessibility: One word: PERFECT I had planned lots of activities and visits, and every time the hotel’s location made things so easy that I barely had to take any taxis.
•La Rambla: 10–12 minutes on foot. •Plaça Catalunya: about 15 minutes on foot, with fountains, shops, and the theater. I even saw a flamenco show there. On the hotel’s street: plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops. •The port: also close by. •El Born neighborhood: just a 3-minute walk. •Parc de la Ciutadella: 5–6 minutes on foot. •Palau de la Música: right across, only 6–7 minutes away. •Casa Batlló and Casa Milà: just 2 metro stops with line 4 (yellow). The metro station is only 1 minute from the hotel, right in front. •Passeig de Gràcia: I had dinner at El Nacional there, and it’s also full of museums and luxury shops, just 2 metro stops away. •The Cathedral: 3–4 minutes on foot, where I also did a photo shoot.
Of course, walking times depend on each person’s pace, but overall that’s how long it took me. Honestly, the location really impressed me it made getting around so easy and also saved me money. 😊
The rooms: I was traveling alone but had a room with two single beds (of course I only used one 😀). The room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable (I stayed on the first floor). I especially loved the window style with a contemporary touch it was the first time I’d seen that, and it added a lot of charm. I could also open it to get fresh air, which I really appreciated.
small details to improve: providing a laundry basket, adding a toilet brush, and some tissues in the room to wipe your hands.
Safety: The neighborhood felt very safe. As in all major European cities (I’m from Paris), you do need to watch out for pickpockets, but there are police officers and guards everywhere. It’s nothing like some of the shady areas behind La Rambla. Near Hotel Gótico, even at night, you can walk around peacefully. The streets are very clean and well maintained.
The food: Breakfast was varied and good. There’s something for everyone vegan or not, sweet or savory depending on people’s breakfast habits. There were also some local dishes to try. I’ll share some photos.
Value for money: Definitely worth it!
