historically unique best choice - we'll return!
For those who are looking for a unique place to stay, Malmö offers an historic choice.
We always try to avoid chain hotels since our hotel stays should be as unique and wonderful a part of our vacations as possible, and Mayfair Hotel Tunneln, a short stroll from the central train station, fits the bill in all ways as a privately run hotel.
Friendly and charming Giovanni checked us in and gave us directions on how to reach our room by taking multiple elevators - the first one being really cool and historic - and turning right and left down corridors. Equally friendly and helpful Samina checked us out and gave us some useful tips.
Our room was facing a private courtyard and thus super quiet. We appreciated the ceiling with wooden beams and beautiful flooring, slept like babies on a very comfortable bed, and had excellent wifi connections for all our devices.
We could've eaten dinner at the restaurant joined to the hotel if only we had arrived hungry, we did manage to quench our thirst in the lobby, served delicious alcoholic free cocktails and wine in the lobby area by the Restaurant Quê. There was also a neat historic library with access from the lobby with free coffee and tea 24/7.
Breakfast was in the medieval vaulted cellar with natural light coming from a large window. While we prefer a la carte, this breakfast buffet was not only high quality: due to spacious seating and the offerings being spread throughout, there wasn't the usual shoving and pushing we often experience in buffets.
What really makes Mayfair Hotel Tunneln so special isn't only its history detailed in the multiple corridors with newspaper clippings and pictures on the walls but also the numerous examples of modern art, which the owners collect and exhibit. We could've spent hours just going from one unique piece of furniture or installation or painting, all fascinating in their own right. There are booklets available with details about the hotel's history and all the artwork exhibited throughout the entire building.
Since we'd booked only one night, we didn't get to see everything as we wished. And we fully underestimated how interesting Malmö is, which is now at the top of our "worth-an-encore- visit" list. We won't have to look for a hotel, but simply book early enough in advance to make sure we can stay at the Mayfair Hotel Tunneln - there's enough art and history for at...
Read moreMe and my family had the greatest hotel experience at Mayfair Hotel Tunneln that we've ever had. Not the best room ever - it lacked air conditioning - not the best breakfast ever - it was a solid one, but we've been to some quite opulent hotel breakfasts - but the overall experience was just superb. There were the technical things: the hotel is located right by the train station, the beds were big and comfy, the children really enjoyed the bath, whatever, that's not what sets this hotel apart. It was the history of the building and all the effort that had been put to relay it to the visitor. The look and feel, the atmosphere of a centuries old building, that also has had the necessary renovations for modern comfort (really enjoyed the indoor plumbing, now that I think of the alternative) made our stay really something worth remembering. Some hotels may have a grander buffet for breakfast, but none that I know of can claim to serve the said breakfast in a cellar that was built in the 14th century. Many hotels boast about famous people that have stayed there, but few hotels can tell about people who lived there half a millennium ago. And tell the hotel truly did, with framed excerpts from hotels past in the hallways and a booklet of the building's history in the room, which made the times long gone seem like it was yesterday.
My two children would like to note that the best two things were the bake-them-yourself waffles and the art installation chair with fluorescent tubes. The chair had to be lit up every time we passed by it, it was absolutely great. Oh yeah, the art! The hotel has an impressive collection of modern art along with historic paintings, again, making it so much more than just a place...
Read moreHistoric hotel, good location, convenient for station. |There's a lovely, small, dual aspect library next to Reception, all day coffee, and is comfy to sit in on a rainy afternoon.||Breakfast buffet located in the original, old cellars dating back to 1300s, sadly the cooked breakfast tasted similarly dated. I hate to say, but Breakfast was dreadful. Cold scrambled eggs, cremated bacon, very salty meatballs. In huge serving dishes. Much better to have smaller platters and top them up, yes it's more work, but makes for a tastier and hotter brekkie! On the plus side, there are plenty of other choices available on the buffet. Coffee machine out of order. ||It'd be nice to have a brief summary of the history of the hotel in the breakfast cellar. Rather than the very thick, dog-eared, book. There is one sheet, but oddly written as 'Did you know ...' so not sure who this sheet is aimed at. A missed opportunity to share interesting facts about this unique building.||The Courtyard Room was comfortable, enough power points, even a small fridge, TV. And there's a luggage bench. But ... the room smelt smokey, in a non smoking hotel! I had to remove the black cushions far away from the bed.||Bathroom is spacious, a useful magnifying mirror, plenty of space for toiletries and makeup. But bring your own toiletries as theirs is not insufficient. ||All the Reception staff are very welcoming and helpful. There are steps up to Reception on arrival and down to the Courtyard rooms. I had help with my suitcase, no problem. A pleasant stay. For me it’s 3 Stars because of the poor Breakfast and lack of Toiletries, and smokey room but I’ve given 4 stars because the Staff were...
