My partner then contacted the hotel directly via their website and it immediately became clear just how helpful and professional they are from the initial reply.
We booked our trip and then before we knew it the time came around for our adventure!
Once we arrived at the hotel, late (9pm) on a Friday and after dinner, the staff arranged for our dinner (we had opted for half-board) to be brought to the lovely bar area for after we'd taken our bags to the room (helped immediately by friendly staff!).
The exterior reminds me of the hotel in the movie 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' as it is a striking pink colour! :)
At each turn, staff proved to be friendly, informative and falling over themselves to help us. A testament to the family vibe that runs through not just the core family owners (4th generation I think) but the staff is that many of them seem to have been working there for over 10 years and they also talk as if it is their hotel and do their best to maintain super high standards.
The hotel lobby, and on each floor, contains lots of memorabilia and it feels as if you're on a movie set sometimes and all of the public rooms are well presented.
The restaurant has lots of light allowing views of the surrounding mountains, and if you sit by the window you can also see the lovely shuttle bus drivers getting the small 8 seater shuttle bus ready and see how long you have whilst eating your breakfast!
Breakfast comes in the form of a buffet with cereals, bircher muesli, fruits, scrambled eggs, meats, cheeses, timed hardboiled eggs (they even have two baskets for 5 or 8 min!), breads, teas and coffee and other items can be requested by the ever attentive staff.
I mentioned the shuttle-bus and this is an 8 seater Mercedes van and the guys whizz you to the Flims base station in around 5 minutes! They're also on hand at the end of the day too and I think you can even call them if you end up down at Laax. There is also a free big bus, a typical resort style bus, that runs between Flims-Laax-Falera which is covered by the all area ski pass. People used to ski resorts will also find this straightforward and reliable too.
The hotel has a blackboard in the reception area which highlights activities (yoga classes, gong ceremonies etc) and also offerings to the guests such as après night on the rooftop (more on that in a bit!) on Wednesday with raclette and gluhwein or juice, and tea and cake on a Sunday. All excellently presented and delicious too.
The rooftop makes you feel as if you're in a movie with nearby Flims resort mountains looming above the picture-esque town of Flims and the Waldhaus area. On après night we enjoyed some lovely raclette and locally baked bread and delicious gluhwein. We also were fortunate enough to be invited to birthday drinks there too!
Dinner each evening consisted of salad buffet, a choice of starter, choice of main and a choice of dessert (dessert or cheese board and on one night a dessert buffet!). I don't think I've had such consistently amazingly presented, professional and delicious meals at a hotel before. Most nights they looked like and reminded me of Michelin starred presentations and we later learnt that for the most part it's a team of interns working under the supervision of a pro chef I think. It certainly shows and these trainees are going to turn out world class!
The pool is lovely with hanging chairs and beds around it to relax and with plenty of light too thanks to glass along one side of the room. In the atrium/reception area there is a model of the forthcoming spa extension. Staff had mentioned in feedback and online reviews that guests had written that a larger spa would be nice. As proof that the owners and staff take constructive feedback very seriously, and they always listen, they're building a second floor above the pool to accommodate newer spa features. I cannot wait to return to see how this pans out!
I would not hesitate to recommend staying here as you'll have an amazing time....planning the...
Read moreThe hotel has a beautiful retro design and atmosphere (if that’s your style). We felt like we would go back in time. A very very nice breakfast buffet with a great selection of food options. A big big plus for a selection of local produce - both the selection of cheese and meat was extremely delicious. If you enjoy healthy juices, the ones offered during breakfast will be perfect for you especially the carrot and apple cold pressed juice was super tasty and nutritious. Very good bar both serving classic cocktails as well as tailored made drinks and local selection of alcohol. A super nice selection of saunas with a great design of the spa area. Plus for the amazing viewing terrace on top of the hotel - we really loved it. We don’t understand why spa is until 8pm and swimming pool until 10pm as after whole day in the snow and grabbing some food an evening ended in saunas would be perfect. Restaurant is also open until 20:30. No room service available. The room was quite cramped yes we must admit we had a great view on the mountains however the mattress was definitely too soft and too short by at least 10cm on each side. Uncomfortable cushions. The towels to the spa area that we received also looked like taken out from a grandmas wardrobe from 20years ago.The tv screen is at least 10 years old and hardly bigger than a laptop screen. I don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t place even a normal sized tv in front of the bed. The rooms are very noisy that so I heard the neighbours snoring from the room beside us. The room had no kettle, tea or coffee or even water to drink which is a standard even in 3 star hotels or motels. The hotel wants to be eco friendly. We get it, however it’s not. Please stop. To begin with the hotel states that the mini bar is on demand due to eco reasons of not cooling the items that perhaps you won’t eat or drink. That’s funny as the refrigerator was on 24/7 cranked up to number 5 (maximum) as we checked. Where is the ecology in that? I don’t know. Secondly, the hotel wants to be eco however you have to pay 8 CHF per pair in order to have flip flops instead of providing regular reusable flip flops that would be definitely more eco friendly than rubber slippers made by small kids in China we know that we have received an email with flip flops however it’s still disappointing in a hotel that should be 4stars. Is this a real eco friendly attitude or just a will to get more profit? Another part which is quite amusing to us is the fact that the hotel wants to be so eco friendly however the hotel drives around their guests in a diesel powered Mercedes v class instead of buying an electric version knowing you have at least three charging stations in front of the hotel. However a big plus for a very friendly and kind driver from Slovakia. Very tight and narrow parking. I do understand the hotel has other parking options slightly further away from the hotel however I do not see myself plowing through snow with four suitcases.
English - We have been travelling all around the world in less and more expensive hotels as well as less and more popular places. However never in my entire life I have seen such a discrimination towards English speaking customers that are not fluent in german. Starting with a swimming pool having a german name signs ending to daily notices written on the board in the main hall informing about events taking place in the hotel - all in german. Hypothetically we had to stand with Google translate decoding the board to know that there was a New Year’s Eve concert at 2pm on that day. We fully understand that 90% of your customers are elderly grey haired germans, however I presume you cater for a wider customer base rather than just german speakers.
If you’re a grey haired older german we highly recommend. For younger customers or tourists from abroad you - look for...
Read moreVery well looked after in this very comfortable nicely old style hotel. My brother and I were nicely welcomed and informed about where the ski room was and how their ski shuttle worked. We each had a 'miniscule' room which was perfect for single use. Nice views to mountains. Being British I would have like a kettle and tea making tray! Julio looked after us in the bar and Sina was our main waitress in the very pleasant dining room. Both very professional. Breakfast was what you would expect and dinner was always interesting. Bottled water was quite expensive, ask for a caraffe. The brand new pool/spa area is very nice. Four separate sauna/steam rooms. Will be better once decorated. Floor a bit slippery where damp and after climbing down from the strangely designed cold plunge bath. Steps are awkward in size. Hotel is on top of a rise overlooking the town with great views, especially from the roof top terrace with an honesty bar. We arrived by Postbus from Chur after trains from Zurich. Just over two hours and just a three minute walk from bus stop. Ten to fifteen minute walk down/up to town. Ski shuttle was always on time. I only saw steps to get into hotel, didn't see a ramp for wheelchairs. We are experienced good intermediate skiers. Less than half the runs were open and the higher lifts were closed occasionally. However there was enough skiing at our advancing ages. There are a number of very long lifts, which means long runs. Restaurants were very busy and service could be very slow. Would love to be able to take the hotel to wherever...
